RE: All Time MAC Basketball Players
Is this based on their college career or pro career or some combination?

Maybe Dan Roundfield over Grant Long.
Trying to fit Thunder Dan in there somewhere or Wally World.

Probably Hal Greer over one of those guards, right?

And I don't think we can count Gervin given that Eastern Michigan wasn't in the MAC quite yet.

RE: All Time MAC Basketball Players
I’d find it hard to leave off the only three time MAC player of the year Gary Trent off an all time team.

Antonio Daniels had a heck of a career as well.

RE: All Time MAC Basketball Players
I was thinking teams in the MAC today including their history of players. Also considering how well their NBA career turned out. After your comments, I would adjust the list as follows:

Center - Nate Thurmond
Power Forward- Dan Roundfield
Small Forward- George Gervin
Guard - Ron Harper
Guard - Dan Marjle

Gary Trent surely was a dominant player in the MAC but his pro career was just good. The players above dominated the NBA. I removed Grant Long and replaced him with Dan Roundfield. What do you think?

RE: All Time MAC Basketball Players
I would think All-Time MAC players would be college careers only.

Who had the best pro careers would be a different category.

And they actually have had to play in MAC.

RE: All Time MAC Basketball Players
If you pull in more objective information, such as the following (and maybe weight it), you’ll arrive at the best list:
- Number of all conference first team selections.
- Number of player of the year selections.
- National ranking (if that existed).
- Draft pick number.
- Scoring average
- Assist average
- Rebound average
- Team MAC titles
(And, if you want to consider the NBA, roll in some of those stats)
- Years played in the NBA.
- Years earned all NBA.
- Average scoring, assists, rebounds, etc.

I’m just a bored EMU fan because we really haven’t had a top 4 team in 25 years and counting……and I would argue it’s because of hiring very poor coaches because our facilities our top 3 in the MAC IMHO.

RE: All Time MAC Basketball Players
Perhaps he was before the times of most people on this board, but Howie Komives of BGSU led the nation in scoring in 1963-64 at 36.7. Averaged 25.8 for his college career.

Then played ten years in NBA, mostly with Knicks and Pistons.

Mix for Toledo averaged 25 a game and won MAC POY 2 times in a row. Sadly that's the only candidate with so many amazing players from the MAC of yesteryear. Had a good NBA career taboot.

Mix was POY in 1969 only, not two years in a row.

But he was a left-handed beast.

Any list of all-MAC players that leaves off Gary Trent is absurd.

RE: All Time MAC Basketball Players
Tough to have this debate without deciding if the criteria is mainly college accomplishments or pro. Also easy to overlook the old timers. MAC was a top 10 national conference in the 60s and 70s. Some years we had 4 or 5 guys drafted (draft was more rounds but far less picks per round). Then again in the Harper through Boykins era we had a bunch of great college players and lottery picks. Dave Jamerson, for example, was a great college player and lottery pick who gets forgotten because his NBA career never really panned out.

Thurmond would have to be on any list.
Trent was a dominant college player who had a long NBA career. Bonzi not as dominant but probably just as good.
Gervin was an NBA superstar but his college/MAC career was short and not really in the league.
I never saw Roundfield play in college but he was legendary for those who did.

Wayne Embry? Five time All-Star? Thurmond he’s the edge by position but not many of the others had careers to match Embry’s.

Forgot about Mr. Embry…5 x NBA All-Star. I’m guessing only Nate Thurmond topped that.
