leave the students alone. please. they've done a great job showing up all year. lucky for us...most of them don't care what happens on the road. our athletic department staff has given them a terrific environment they seem to enjoy and our teams...despite all the deficiencies on the men's side in particular...have given them entertaining games to watch.
expecting them to care about uncw is ridiculous too. playing local/regional teams that make sense isn't a northeastern thing. ever heard of southeastern conference football? they are in charge of college athletics. everyone wants to be them...but you know the one thing everyone always forgets as they're adding st. louis to the a-10, usc/ucla to the big 10, and nc ac @ t to the caa?
the sec doesn't give a damn about anywhere else but the southeastern united states. they play games that makes sense. they've kept rivalries that make sense. they'll add texas-texas a & m once the longhorns join in a couple years. they play competitive games the fans can travel to and get excited about because they're playing their neighbor. enthusiasm breeds interested which breeds money which breeds power.
if you don't understand this...you don't understand the competitive nature of sports. i grew up playing in the northwestern lehigh vs. northern lehigh rivalry and going to lehigh-lafayette games. too many people lost their passion and are more worried about net rankings, bracketology, and other nonsense that the average fan (like a drexel student) doesn't care about.
i'm going to the villanova-uconn women's game tomorrow and i'm pumped. supposedly it's a sellout. they had to make a waiting list for student tickets. people want to see good basketball between teams that they can relate to. next project is to get people to care about women's basketball like they should...but part of me wants to keep it a secret. i haven't seen a word from drexel fans about what denise dillon is doing over there. she's on the verge of making them a top 10 program nationally if things break well for her over the next 6 weeks. if it's another situation where we're finding a reason to whine about something like the other city schools turn their nose up to us...get over yourself. nobody hated villanova more than i did 5 or so years ago.
