It still blows my mind that Brian Gregory has been a head coach in a top 10 conference for 18 of the last 19 years. UD fans wanted to run him out of town back in 2006. He parlayed a 7th and 8th place finish in the A10 his last two seasons into the Georgia Tech Job.

He never even finished .500 in the ACC (or higher than 9th) but was only out of work for a year when he got the South Florida job. He's never even finished .500 in AAC and his best finish was a tie for 7th. Just a magical run of inexplicable employment.

He and Josh Pastner have the two most elite runs of "keep gettin dem checks" of anyone in college basketball.

It makes one wonder what are the hiring requirements at Georgia-Tech? They hired an underachieving Gregory, and then followed that up with hiring an underachieving Pastner.

And to think they made it to a National Championship game this century.

Ody was unstoppable in the second half! LOL unreal. He misses so many easy ones, it was nice to see him finish around the rim.

Nolley could not seem to get it quite going. Still ended up with a double-double.

What else? DDJ had a bunch of assists and actually hit a couple big shots when we were struggling. Hensley had some nice minutes. Skillings hit two corner 3s. I think MAW made two 3s as well, which was good to see. Ezikpe played hard, poor guy. Really a fun second half.

USF is a disaster. They have been as long as I've been a UC fan. Very much looking forward to never playing them again.

JD has been rightfully criticized in the past, but ever since being relegated to a bench spark, he's really improved his game (most importantly his decision making). Still imperfect, but at this point, most of this is physical ability (i.e. "tweener" status).

And Ody has also taken a lot of huge steps. Go figure, the two players that comprise UC's "black hole 4" position were the ones in a large part, carrying a heavy load last night.

Hopefully those two continue to build upon that momentum. I know I can't get too excited until I see it vs. teams with a pulse.

That 2004 Georgia-Tech team only had one legit NBA player on the roster in Jarret Jack. Great PG play is everything in the tournament.

This Pistons fan would be rimissed to not say that that Will Bynum was also a legit NBA player.

Good catch, I missed him when scanning their roster.

Yep, he's the textbook case of the guy that was going to be the next great young rising coach after a little success at Dayton. He's fooled enough folks into believing that to get and keep some highly compensated jobs at major schools.

To me, it speaks to the uncertainty of success when moving up the ladder. The Peter Principle in action. And we see it every year in college basketball and football. For every Brian Kelly, there's probably another dozen (or more) from the MAC or Sun Belt or A10 that never get traction after promotion to high major programs.

I think he’s been fortunate to go to two schools whose athletic department has been horribly run the past 20 years. His UD run was okay, which resulted in him getting the Georgia Tech gig. His time at Georgia Tech stunk, but fortunately for him USF came calling. Most other schools on the rise would not have called. Even if they did, they would not have kept him around for another six years like USF has done.

Good points, all

I'm amused looking back at the last couple of decades at the richest of the rich--Texas. A parade of promising young coaches passed through in both basketball and football and they really haven't tasted much success in either major sport until this season.

I get the feeling you need to be really experienced to handle the alumni and administration at Texas.
