59-49 Rice. Not pulling away like we did on Thursday but also keeping FIU at bay. A bit too stagnant on offense over the past few minutes for my liking. And maybe a bit overreliant on Bellamy.

Lead is down to 7 at the media TO. Shooting has gone ice-cold.

In other games of relevance to us… 3rd place UTEP opened up a 24-6 1Q lead at home against last place UTSA.

Runners are now on a 19-2 run and suddenly it’s a one-point game inside last 2 minutes of 1H!

If I had a nickel for every missed layup this game, I could fund the stadium renovation.

Really nice hustle by Gooden there to stop the transition opportunity. Has been solid outside that rough first few minutes.

67-58 looks like the final, way to finish!

Rice wins 67-58. Bellamy stuffed the stat sheet in her first start. Fisher with an efficient 19. Gooden missed like 5 shots in the first minute or two but ended with 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Clifton gave us a jolt in the 2nd quarter. Quieter games for some others.

Not as good of a performance as Thursday, but still an improvement over some other CUSA games.

A little breathing room for us now at 8-6, fourth place and 1.5 games ahead of 4 teams tied at 5th (6-7) including FIU.

Two of those teams play each other later today, and another one is leading at the half, so we’ll maintain a 1-game lead on 5th.

We’re now only a half game behind UTEP. They lead at their half by just 30-27.

We only “won” two of the four quarters.

But we won ours by 9 and 4. They won theirs by 3 and 1.

I’ll take it.

But to paraphrase Frizzy Owl — if I had a “quarter” for every quarter we’ve underperformed….

Maybe UTEP just put the starters back in. They open up the 2nd half on a 10-2 run, will the real UTEP please stand up? (They also collapsed against WKU recently so… still keeping an eye on this score all afternoon)
