RE: Bill sending $350,000,000
This is great news. Article is behind a paywall, but here's the important part. I'm claiming fair use for two sentences.

Quote:Lee announced in his State of the State address that Tennessee's upcoming budget would contain a grant for the exact amount that Strickland wants.

Lawmakers will have to approve the funds, but House Speaker Cameron Sexton, R-Crossville, has previously said he is in favor of the funding.

Terrific news. Wipes out the bad taste from the Tulane game results 10,000 fold.

The request to raise the hotel tax from 3.5 to 5% has not yet been approved but is a common add for major capital improvements.

Does not include money for AUTOZONE PARK or the proposed soccer stadium/roundhouse replacement

Woot! Was at Memphis Sports and Event Center this past weekend for kiddo’s Futsal tournament. Very nice facility and the area around the Stadium keeps improving every year.

Awesome. I remember numerous posters several months ago said this would never happen.

Now the powers that be need to be on the phone with the big12 shouting out the fact that Memphis is serious about investing in the program.

From a Q&A in the Tennessean with House Speaker Cameron Sexton:

Quote:How confident are you in the House approving money for remodels at FedExForum and Liberty Stadium in Memphis?

Sexton: Liberty Bowl and FedExForum are used by the University of Memphis, so my big thing is trying to help them get into a power five conference. There are certain things that those conferences said that you have to upgrade, like minimum required upgrades. It'd be great for Memphis to be in the power five because that would help Tennessee and Memphis grow. The upgrades at FedEx would also help the Grizzlies, but they are not asking for a rebuild. It's all remodeling. We've done this at Neyland Stadium and a lot of different remodeling for colleges before.

Q&A: House Speaker Sexton on criminal justice, Memphis sports and Nashville's council

I'm not sure how Sexton thinks giving the city $350 million is the right way to help the University, but I'll hope for the best.

I hope it's all beautiful, Memphis gets in the P5, and everyone lives happily ever after. If so, I suspect the flying pigs will negatively impact the local bbq restaurants.

This coming from an 8th generation Tennessean from Crossville who graduated from UT.

Perhaps finally, the state recognizes that West Tennessee in general, and Memphis in particular, are in the state of Tennessee and need to be looked after like the rest of the state, and that what's good for Memphis is good for the state.

Kudos to him! Now let's hope the legislature does their part.

He said that there were prerequisite upgrades required, and I'm assuming this satisfies those upgrades. That seems to be about as clear as possible regarding how he thinks it's the right way to help the University. Would you prefer turning down the grant?

He may think it, but that doesn't make him right.

To ignore Memphis is to shoot yourself in the foot. This area generates significant revenue for the State, and any blight on Memphis is a blight on Tennessee. Perhaps they're beginning to understand that.
