I was clearly wrong
I truly believed and posted that we would be top four in the weakened OVC conference. Secretly I believed we would finish second or maybe even first. Boy was I wrong. The remaining OVC teams are clearly better than I thought, and we are clearly worse. SIU-E looked as big, strong, and talented as any team I saw in the Sun Belt last season. Murray State achieved a 7 seed playing against these same teams (minus Belmont) last year so the league couldn't have been that bad. Can't recall a Sun Belt team seeded that high in all the years we were in the Belt (maybe WKU was one time). Obviously our men's team is very "competitive" with the OVC schools. But, we will have to step it up a notch to actually compete for titles. So, all in all, this season has been a rude awakening for me. Especially after our first game, a blow-out win over UT-Martin who some picked to win the league, gave me a false confidence in how we would do this season. Our women's team, not surprisingly, is obviously thriving, although EIU is still undefeated in the league and 19-3 overall. Looking forward to playing them, at home, again with Sali Kourouma. Hard not to come to the conclusion that coaching is the difference in the 2 programs. Problem is, we are never going to get a "Joe Foley" on the men's side, and if we do, he won't be here for more than one season. Tough to be a mid, or now, a low major.

I would much rather have a up and coming coach who will pump excitement into the program and win for a year or two, than a has been Prima Donna who can’t get us out of the cellar! Western Kentucky thrived for years having up and coming coaches move on to higher job, to be replaced by another up and coming coach. What’s wrong with that?

Sounds good, but don't see it ever happening here. Newell left and we had to wait, more than 20 years for our next NCAA bid. Beard left and we have had the worst 7 year stretch in the history of the program. I realize we'll never get a Foley on the men's side, but I really don't want another Beard who wins big for one year but leaves the program worse than when he got here. Except for one season, the past 7 years have been tough to endure for this diehard Trojan fan.

In those seven years, we have had two coaches. Neither one was good. But, at least Flanagan was let go by Conque when he didn’t perform. We will see if Lee has the same fortitude.

I disagree that our program didn’t have some success between Newell and Beard. Sanderson did take us to the NIT when there was no automatic bid for leagues like ours, and Shields did go to the dance. For some reason you are hung up on having a coach who wants to retire in the Little Rock job. Unfortunately, you may already have your wish with the current disaster of a men’s coach! Programs go through bad stretches, and we are no different. The question is what you do about it!

I had no complaints about Wimp or Coach Shields.
