A look at the greener grass for former Cougars.
Updated for end of the season stats-

Last seasons best player, Brandon Betson transferred to Tulsa. At Chicago State, he was a second-team all-WAC selection … led the team in scoring with a 14.2 average and assists at 3 per game. He started all 32 games and averaged 34.5 minutes and was WAC Player of the Week when he averaged 20.0 points per game on 14-of-27 shooting.

Tulsa finished 5-25, 1-17 AAC. Betson averaged 9 points with 10 starts. He has one more year of eligibility.

Ali Abbou Dibba missed part of Chicago States season due to Covid travel restrictions and injury. However, he got 26 minutes of playing time in his games and was WAC Freshman of the Week.

Dibba transferred to Abilene Christian, who was once had an NCAA tourney win before losing their coach a few years ago. ACU finished with wins in 9 D1 games and finished 10th in the WAC. Dibba scored 9 points and had 3 rebounds per game with 11 starts. Definitely less than the 34 minutes and 20+ points he was often got as a Cougar.

On the women’s side Aaliyah Collins was a Second Team All-WAC, All-WAC Newcomer Team, 5 time WAC Freshman of the Week, and National Freshman Player of the week at Chicago State. She averaged 15 points , 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2.4 steals per game.
Her steals per game ranked fourth in the WAC and 33rd nationally, seventh in the WAC in assists.
Scored 25 points on 7-of-10 shooting against Wisconsin
First career double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds at Seattle U.

At Grand Canyon she averaged 8 ppg versus her 15 at CSU. She had been a consistent starter, but plays a lot less than last season.

GCU is at least successful, with a 21-11 record.

RE: Former Cougars
Coreyoun Rushin, who transferred to Tarleton after the 21-22 season played big minutes at Chicago State. As a Cougar, he started all but one game, averaged 10 points and 7 boards in 30 minutes. Season high was 18 points, 15 rebounds

At Tarleton he started just 6 games and averaged 2.7 points and 1.6 rebounds in 10 minutes per game on a team that finished 8th in the WAC and 13-17 in D1 games, with a first round exit in the WAC tournament.

Former Chicago State leading scorer in 21-22, Brandon Betsen has transferred again. After leaving for Tulsa where he played in all 30 games and started the final 9 in 22-23, he’s now on to his 5th college. This time it’s Sacramento State.

The Powers That Be have got to get a handle on this transfer fiasco.

Bryce Johnson, who was a solid player for the Cougars, is now on a UMBC teams who is just 7-16, 315 in the NET. The Retrievers are next to last in the America East.

Brandon Betson is a Sacramento State, who 6-17, and is 323 in the NET. They are dead last in the Big Sky currently.

Ali Dibba is having a fine season at Abilene Christian. Maybe he wanted to play in the NCAA tournament. So far, that’s a big swing and a miss. ACU is 8-13 and 257 in the NET. ACU is in 10th out of 11 teams, so it’s unlikely to even make the conference tournament. Whoops.

If they were looking for better programs, they sure didn’t find them.

Ali Dibba, former Cougar who only played briefly due to eligibility clearance, showed big talent and was WAC Freshman POW, transferred to Abilene Christian after a semester at CSU.

Surprise, surprise, he’s on the bounce again and has entered the transfer portal already. Texas grass isn’t any greener than Cougar green I guess.

That’s the problem with the transfer portal-you’re bringing in people you already know are restless and on the lookout for new things and not into making the best of what is right in front of them.

There probably are four different reasons for moving. 1) Personal reasons (family, getting closer to home). 2) Don't like the coach or the culture at the school. But usually it will be 3) Moving to a higher level school, or 4) getting more playing time, which usually means moving down.

Ali Dibba is back in the Land of Lincoln, now at Carbondale. He will be a good player in the Valley. At Chicago, for those who don’t remember, he arrived late in the first semester due to Covid travel restrictions, played 5 games for the Cougars, including a big 21 point and 7 boards in his collegiate debut versus Grand Canyon, earning him WAC Freshman POW. He scored in double figures a majority of the few games he played here. He then missed the final 12 games due to injury.

After transferring to Abilene Christian, he lead them in scoring last season before looking for another, greener pasture.

Can’t help but laugh at the Wesley Cardet situation. He was an absolute star at Chicago State, getting national attention.

At 12-18 Providence, he’s their #4 scorer and getting 8 ppg and playing 21 minutes.

He rolled the dice, which is his prerogative. But things didn’t really go his way. He’s farther from being drafted now than when he was a Cougar most likely. He’s an afterthought player on an afterthought team that just lost to DePaul.

The biggest Big East win he’s participated in is a win over 6th place Villanova. Providence is 6-13 in the BE right now, and all wins are against lower half teams. Two against last place Seton Hall.

Ali Dibba is doing well at SIU, leading them with 16+ ppg, similar to the numbers he put up during his brief, injury shortened year with the Cougars. But SIU is 13-18 and going nowhere this season.

Another transfer fail IMO.

With him and Cardett on the roster, the Cougars would be challenging for an NEC title and NCAA bid this season- something none of the transfers out are sniffing this season.

Bryce Johnson is another player I hated to see transfer. He’s a big scorer for 13-18 UMBC, just like he was at Chicago State. But the Retreivers are only 5-11 in the American East, which is 8th out of 9 teams.

They won’t be seeing any post season there either.

Aaliyah Collins, who left GCU for High Point was National Freshman of the Week at Chicago State, and WAC Freshman of the Week 5 times. Now at HPU, she is no better than their 5th best player. I can say that because High Point had 4 All Conference players, and she was not one of them.

From scoring 15 a game as a freshman as Chicago State, her production has consistently fallen over the years.

HPU is, however, at a least decent team and is 18-13, so I guess she has that.

Jahsean Corbet transferred to Duquesne after 3 seasons with the Cougars. He’s averaging 8 ppg for 13-17 Duquesne. He started a lot early in the year, but is now coming off the bench as a Senior.

It was extra nice to see LIU lose in the semifinals, as that team has 3 former Cougars on it. Coach Gillian, Senior Brent Davis, and back up AJ Neal.

They looked as though they might challenge Central Connecticut as much as they had been winning late in the season. Rod Strickland and his son won’t be getting an NCAA appearance together as they hoped either, which is nice. They will likely get to play in a tournament below the NIT though.
