No doubt, Martin had a great season. The reason why I wouldn't put him on the list, is that he didn't have the versatility that Penny, Rose or KD have. Martin was the right man for that team. Aside from Davenport, nobody could create their own shot. Martin could get the ball to Tyler outside and he could hit a three, and he could score the ball.

I think any of the other point guards mentioned (EP, Penny, Rose, Tyreke, JJ, KD) could have been just as effective, or even superior as scorers. I also think that they would have been better at running the offense with any of the other teams before that.

On the 2019 team, KD would have been a better scorer and would have gotten everyone else more involved, especially Tyler. On the Penny and EP teams, as well as the 2009, 2014 teams, he would have scored the ball AND he would have had more assists than the point guards on that team.

IMO, the only question is if he would have been better than Penny or Rose. Maybe, maybe not.

We've had a ton of great PGs. I hate to even begin to name them all, as someone will be missed. Quickly, I see Antonio Burks has not yet been mentioned. Alvin Wright was amazing.

Love convos like these. Love hearing what our long time fans remember.

KD definitely fits in with the quality we've come to expect at PG. HE IS AMAZING! Thanks to him for coming. Thanks to Penny for getting him here and being a great mentor to him.

Alvin "The Yo Yo" Wright was quite good.

After Penny (and, yes, he was basically a PG)

1A. KD
1B. D-Rose

Having a player like Davis choose the Tigers and endorse Penny so adamantly will only help future recruiting. I expect Davis will continue to praise Penny as Duren has been doing after moving on to professional basketball. Looking forward to the snowball effect continuing to gain momentum.

Actually, now that you mention it, senior Burks MIGHT have been the best on almost all of them, especially 2019 and the EP years.

The late Larry Finch was a fine point guard.

RE: Outside of Penny, is Kendric Davis the best PG we've ever had in the regular season?
I would break the categories like this. Best small PG (6'2 and below) vs Best big PG (6'3 or above). When it comes to small PG. EP had the best midrange game for all the small PG and was a great scorer. Andre Turner midrange was a close 2nd because with 2 minutes to go he was money. I think KD is a more versatile scorer and reminds me of Joe Jackson in that regard. Actually this is what Joe probably would look like has he played for Penny instead of Pastner. Detric Golden had the best jumper from 3 of all small PG. JJ, KD and EP was the best from the free throw line. Chris Garner was the best at steals and Andre was the best passer. I would put KD as best ball handler. Close 2nd is Darius Washington. EP and KD are best at drawing fouls. It tough to say whose the best of all. EP, JD, JJ and Andre are littered all over the career record books and no one can forget the seasons KD, D Rose and Jeremiah Martin had.

Best Tiger Small PG categories
Best ballhandler: KD; Darius Washington: Antonio Burks
Best Scorer: Elliott Perry
Best 3 pt Jumper: Detric Golden
Best Mid-Range: EP and Andre Turner
Best Free Throw Shooter: KD, EP, JJ
Most athletic: JJ and Antonio Burks
Best on ball defender: Antonio Burks
Best in steals: Chris Garner
Most Clutch: Andre Turner
Best Passer: Andre Turner
Best Hustle: Alex Lomax
Best at drawing fouls: KD and EP
One man press break: Andre Turner and Chris Garner.
Best backup: Andre Allen

Best Tiger Big PG categories if you include Penny
Best ballhandler: Tyreke Evans
Best Scorer: Jeremiah Martin
Best 3 pt Jumper: Penny Hardaway
Best Mid-Range: Derrick Rose
Best Free Throw Shooter: Tyreke Evans
Most athletic: D. Rose; Penny
Best on ball defender: D. Rose
Best in steals: Penny
Most Clutch: Penny
Best Passer: Penny
Best Hustle: Shyrone Chatman
Best at drawing fouls: Tyreke Evans D. Rose
One man press break: Penny
Best backup: Chris Crawford

Unpopular take, but Rose wouldn’t be in my top 3 of all time PGs at Memphis

He was really good. But part of why we think of him as phenomenal is that 1. he was a freshman and 2. it’s hard to separate his NBA success— and his potential— from who he actually was at Memphis. For those reasons, we lionize him and sort of blow out of proportion who he was when he was here. It’s hard to separate the man from the myth

You do have to take into account that Rose had a stacked team around him when he was here, though.

I’d take Penny, KD, and Tyreke over Rose. I’d also seriously consider Burks, Turner, Perry, and senior Martin over freshman Rose.

Might as well throw this in, Keith Lee was the best point guard, since several on these lists were never our point guard.

Rose dominated NCAA and NBA All Stars, the entire tournament. He destroyed them.

Rose became the youngest MVP ever in the history of the NBA at 22. Enough said.

He had an excellent tournament. He was also very much a freshman-- with freshman mistakes-- through a lot of the season. People forget he had a handful of games where he was a complete no-show. That's to be expected of a freshman, but is one of the reasons I'd take a veteran KD or Martin over a freshman Rose.

Rose never really had to carry a team (which might deflate his stats)-- but I'm not convinced he could carry a team (as a freshman) if were called upon to do what KD and Martin did night in and night out.

Here's his game log (I think I probably saw all of his home games and many of his road games in person:
