Hmm…I wouldn’t be surprised if they have to do a scheduling agreement with the Gulf South so that both leagues can fill schedules.

It's not a great situation that the Carolinas and the Gulf South will be in with only six football members. Yes, they can do a schedule agreement and there are other opportunities. The SIAC has an odd number of teams and the MEC and the SAC will have an odd number of teams starting in 2025 so someone will be looking to fill an opening every week of the 11-game season. Going to be some work but it's doable.

Yes, because you can n ever have too many schools in North Carolina. John Swofford told me that.

What if the two conferences combined temporarily like the OVC and Big South are doing?

The Gulf South schools are some of D2’s best fb schools. These Conference Carolina schools not so much. The CC schools are doing this to land a team in the playoff.

I'm not so sure if there will be a formalized scheduling agreement here, given that these realignment decisions weren't exactly amicable...or at least, not in the very short term.

Probably best for all parties *on the field* though. Shorter has a chance to be much more competitive now.

Yeah, they may have a chance to end up third at best.

If anything, the LSC and GCS should merge into a football conference.

That would be an oversized league. With Sul Ross St coming in the Lone Star core will have 8 schools. The Gulf South would be another 6.

Wouldn't be much different than MIAA in numbers, or at least what they used to be. I haven't kept up with D2 in a few years outside the GSC.

RE: D2 Conference Carolinas bringing back football
A scheduling agreement between the GSC and CC is my expected outcome. All parties appear to have been gracious so far, and there's still some time between now and 2025. I don't think a full conference merger is desired because I expect both conferences will be looking to grow their football membership. This will probably be more like the GLVC/GMAC partnership.

That's a bit reductive, considering Chowan and UNC-Pembroke aren't coming from strong conferences. This is just as much for geography and scheduling convenience as it is for playoff implications.

Conference Carolinas football could come crumbling down if UNC-Pembroke gets an invite to D1 Big South.

More than 2.5 years before the first Conference Carolinas game is played and it's already doomed because of something you have been "predicting" for a decade. Show any verifiable documented proof published by the University of North Carolina at Pembroke of when they spoke to any D1 conference. And what happened to your "prediction" of UNC-Pembroke joining the ASUN.

The LSC could cut Western Oregon, Central Washington, and Simon Frasier from their lineup since they're affiliates. Those three could join the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference as affiliates instead since Colorado is closer to Oregon and Washington than Texas is. I haven't heard anything about Sul Ross State moving up.

St. David,

How soon can we expect this to happen?

And could UNC-Pembroke be eyeing an eventual move to FBS and Conference USA?

Sul Ross State has submitted their application and if accepted will begin D2 and LSC competition in 2024. If the LSC lets the GNAC schools go, they will be looking for 4 OOC games and that's not easy to do in D2 football.

That's why the GSC and LSC should merge for football only...
