SEC: Kentucky, Missouri, South Carolina, Vanderbilt
XII: BYU, Texas Tech
IND: (none)

These are the non-power schools who have made a BCS/NY6 bowl:

Questions

1) Which power school who hadn't made a BCS/NY6 bowl will be the next one off the list above?
2) Which non-power school who hadn't made a BCS/NY6 bowl will be the next one off the list above?
3) Which non-power conference will "dominate" the autobid for non-power conferences?

My Answers

1) South Carolina
2) Appalachian St (or whoever is the 2023 Sun Belt Champion)
3) Sun Belt

That's very kind of you. I wish I thought the same. We have our 2010-2017 Defensive Coordinator and our 2013-2018 Co-Offensive Coordinator coming back to the same positions for 2023 (except drop the "Co" part), so maybe we'll put up more of a fight.

1) BYU
2) SMU
3) American

BYU as an independent didn't have a path to the NY6. In 2020, their #11 team was forced to go to the Cure Bowl because that's the only bowl tie they had available. I personally feel like 2020 BYU was better than 2020 Cincy.

SMU's collective is set to pay players on both the football and basketball teams $36,000 a year. I think this is the best among G5s. I believe Rhett Lashlee is a good coach too, exciting offense that players will want to play for. I think SMU is set up nicely to build a consistent run.

American is the 6th best conference and will likely continue to be the 6th best conference. So far you have seen better NIL activity from them. There is also a financial disparity since AAC has the highest media payout compared to the other G5s.

Pretty sure Missouri shouldn't be on that list. They played in the Cotton Bowl right after joining the SEC.

It wasn’t a NY6 bowl yet.

UCONN was in the Big East at the time, which was a 'power' conference, right? 05-stirthepot

RE: Schools - BCS/NY6 Bowl Participants
1. South Carolina, I can't see any of the others competing for a NY6 bowl soon besides maybe Minnesota/NC State.
2. UTSA, they're on a roll in a big market with no other local college/pro teams.
3. I don't think any conference will dominate like the AAC has, though there may be a skew towards the AAC/Sun Belt.

The first list would’ve been a bit slimmer if the NY6 rules were in place since 1998, a few teams like 2004 Cal and 2007 Mizzou definitely had the resumes to make a major bowl game but barely missed out based on the rules/selection procedures at the time.

By the same token, you would’ve seen a lot more non-power teams on the second list if there was an auto-bid for the past 25 years - Marshall (1999), Miami (2003), and so on.
