Champion is definitely something you grab for a trendy hoodie or sweater, but there's nothing that compares to Nike. I don't think y'all are realizing how impactful Nike is when it comes to recruiting. Nike runs the Elite Youth Basketball League, which is where every basketball prospect is filtered through, especially the ones we're going to need to work on getting if we're going to compete in the AAC. They're also involved with The Opening, which Dilf has experience with and knows how valuable it is from a recruiting perspective.

THIS is the reason schools go with Nike (or adidas), especially basketball. The shoe companies get involved with the recruits and sponsoring their AAU teams when they are about 12 years old. Under Amour isn't that kind of player in the game, though they were hot for about 15 minutes of fame and several hundred million dollars.

Nike also influences scheduling and has been known to play matchmaker bringing Nike schools together for made for TV events. Their Jordan Brand tournament is an example of this. That was a bigtime event this season with UNC, Oklahoma, Florida and Michigan competing.

I would love to see Nike get behind UAB Football and help bringing a quality Nike school to Protective or, here me out, Legion Field. The 100th anniversary of Legion Field is in 2027. Nike could be a big player there in bringing a major team to Bham for a celebration of the city's college football heritage, because you'd need to have that corporate money and showcase to get them to give up a home game. One of the biggest Nike schools happens to have some history at that stadium too. I doubt they would get on board, but how about Tennessee?

Any updates on the Under Armor deal ending at the end of the month and the possible move to Nike?

Looks like Notre Dame is also moving away from Under Armor when their deal ends at the end of the month.

If UAB is indeed moving away from UA , we won't hear anything publicly until June 1st at the earliest. UA has the right to match any 3rd party offer through May 31, 23.

Quote:The contract, which was provided to AL.com through a public records request, stated that the seven-year agreement started on June 1, 2016, and runs through May 31, 2023. UAB's product allowance will start at $1,075,000 and Under Armour will pay UAB a $50,000 rights fee each year. The contract can be renewed for an additional three years by mutually consenting in writing by Oct. 1, 2022.

The average product allowance over the seven-year span is around $1,026,000; a number that Ingram said is around three to four times higher than its previous deal with Nike and a number significantly higher than what Nike and Adidas offered...

The contract stipulates that Under Armour will have right of exclusive renewal negotiations until Oct. 1, 2022 (or Oct. 1, 2025 if contract is extended) and will have the right to match any third party offer submitted between the exclusive negotiation end date and contract end date (May 31, 2023, or May 31, 2026, if contract is extended).

Maybe ESPN will facilitate a few match ups.

With our history with ESPN, I wouldn't expect any assistance from that direction.

Hoping with the contract with the AAC they would now have a vested interest in at least helping create some match ups. There was no point while being hitched to the CUSA boat anchor.

RE: Rumor: UAB changing to Nike
UnderArmor withdrawing from the uniform space means that there is one less bidder to push the payouts higher. The bell cow to watch is Notre Dame, whose UA contract has already run out. That's as blue chip a name as it gets, so the number they are offered will likely be the ceiling for such contracts in the post UA era, at least for this season and the immediate future..

I've heard discussion of schools doing contracts for uniforms but not shoes in order to allow the players to negotiate their own shoe deal for NIL value. That likely means just a couple of guys per team get meaningful money, but it's out there as a possibility. Perhaps guys below the top tier can get some less than elite money, but get some value out of the deal.

I was about to ask what people thought about moving to Jordan brand. Dilfer's Lipscomb team was Jordan.

It will likely be filled with crimson crap and have one UAB endcap if we were to go Nike.

Wow, I did not know that. UAB some how getting Jordan brand would be monumental. There's all kind of school specific shoe releases that Jordan schools get that kids really love.

I don’t know the requirements but Jordan brand appears to be very hard to get into. Off the top of my head the only schools that are Jordan are Oklahoma, Michigan, UNC, UCLA, Marquette, Howard, and Oregon is like a weird both where they are Nike but get the Jordan shoes and other deals
