RE: STR Emoni Bates
One would hope he's doing better with another year under his belt. He was pretty rough last season. Historically he's been at his best against sub-par competition and at Eastern Michigan, with the exception of Michigan and FAU, they haven't really played any teams of note. Factoring in the teams they've been playing, his high scoring likely has more to do with them willing to continuously feed him the ball than anything else. Aside from Farrakhan, when he's having a good game, they aren't overflowing with better options.

In spite of Bates generating most of the offense, they still can't seem to find a way to win any games. Not surprisingly, they lost again tonight and are currently sitting on a record of 4-16 overall and 1-6 (last place) in a low caliber conference. Will it be enough for Bates to transition to the NBA? With his height and outside shooting, I'm guessing there will be a team ready to gamble on him in the second round. I have serious doubts he will be a lottery pick as many once projected. With enough hard work, he may even develop into decent role player in the league, but his lack of toughness and negative wingspan won't do him any favors.

I wish the kid the best. He didn't work out here, but everyone deserves a chance at redemption. I'm still glad he's not a Tiger this season, with all of the drama he brought, along with his father.

Emoni found what he needed… a team not concerned about winning but focused on getting him lots of shots.

No, Bates would not be averaging 21 for Memphis like he is right now, but let's not pretend this team couldn't use his scoring prowess. The problem last year wasn't Bates, it was the backlog at his position with the likes of Lester and Nolley that caused tension. This year it would have set up much better for him. Personally im fine with him not on the team, but again, its a mistake to pretend he wouldn't be a net positive for this team this year.

Nobody's pretending anything. He's a superstar for a team that's #341 in the NET. He's putting up those numbers because of two primary factors: the competition has been overwhelmingly poor (with few exceptions) and they constantly feed him the ball because they don't have better options. Surely you don't think he would be nearly as effective against consistently better competition do you, even if that team let him ball hog the way he does at Eastern Michigan?

This is how their season (and level of competition) has looked thus far:

Before you point out Michigan and FAU, how do you explain this?

Northern Illinois - 18 min, 7 pts
Akron - 26 min, 3 pts
Illinois State - 29 min, 9 pts

Etc.

Bates would have been more effective than Kennedy and Franklin are now for our team. Not sure how you could argue that. Like I said, he wouldn't average 20, but he would have provided a legitimate outside threat. Do I think he would be some all time game changer for us? No, but its silly to dismiss him like he would have been complete crap

Not just Bates having a good year, there's Boogie at USC having another good year & Baugh at TCU who is an integral part of a good TCU team that beat Kansas the other night.

Maybe, maybe not. The level of competition he has with his current team is literally a joke, and they are the absolute worst team in a terrible conference. For anyone to compare his current situation to the Tigers is laughable. I'm also not convinced he would have bought into the program like Kennedy and Franklin have, and who knows how he would have impacted team chemistry. By most accounts, having him leave was a huge positive for the program, but I don't know personally so I'll leave that as speculation.

Its not a big deal to me. He wanted to leave. Like I said it wasn't like we lost an All American; but I would not have minded having him this year is all

I hear you, but don't forget that suddenly he had "back issues" that only some random doctor in Michigan could address (when he had the best ortho guys available in Memphis for free) after Penny decided to cut his playing time, because he was a liability. After we cut bait, we went on a tear that saved the season.

If you would read my original post, I'm not saying that he completely sucks. I expect he'll have a team willing to gamble on him for cheap in the second round of the draft. He might even become a solid role player if he's willing to put in the work. He isn't untalented, but playing team basketball is more than putting up points. The Eastern Michigan record is a testament to that.

Davis is the worst player on the team according to you.

Penny didn't run off Bates like he did some of the others. But there were whispers that if Bates came back, Deandre would not. At the end of the day, Bates' camp decided the best way to get his stock back up was to be the big fish in the small pond. And we got Deandre back. Pretty solid win-win.
