Campbell Camels...what is going on?
Can someone tell me what's going on with Campbell? It's an unremarkable academic institution with unremarkable overall financial resources (budget and endowment). It was a nonentity for years in the A-Sun, then it added football and joined the Big South.

They've had Mike Minter, a well known Carolina Panthers player, as football head coach for a decade. His tenure is generously described as less than mediocre with just three winning seasons during his ten year tenure. But they were invited to the Colonial, where they do not appear to be a strong institutional fit and don't appear to enhance football competitiveness. And now two years in a row, they appear to have the #1 recruiting class in FCS.

In the Austin Peay thread, someone mentioned that Campbell may well have FBS aspirations. Is that likely?

Regardless, what is going on at Campbell that has allowed this sudden rise to the Colonial and landing top FCS recruiting classes despite not even having made the FCS playoffs in their history?

Sounds like. Say, a booster just got promoted to President of a mid-size company and decided to show off at his alma mater rather than buy a boat to sail the Caribbean.

My sister went there for a few years. It's a place that had like 1 stop light. It's just remarkable.

Campbell opened new football and basketball stadiums in 2008. Fast growing state. Mid-pack CAA budget. Nothing remarkable, they just checked all the boxes.

Nothing remarkable, but they signed back to back #1 recruiting classes in FCS despite not coming close to the playoffs ever. They must have a one man NIL collective.

Campbell is in a very crowded TV market.

They are in the "Raleigh/Durham/Fayetteville" TV market, which already has NC State, Duke, and UNC Chapel Hill. ECU is only one county away from being in that TV market too.

And Wake Forest not that far away either.

"Stadium"? It hold 5,500, looks like a small college, NAIA or D3 stadium. New basketball holds 3,000, looks ok, but again, NAIA, D3 or D2. State may be growing, but the closest growth area is Raleigh, town it is in has 3,000 people (not fast growing) and the school has 6,100 students. Not long ago it was Campbell College, acceptance rate of 81%, with half the applicants admitted having an SAT score between 1010 and 1210 or an ACT score between 19 and 25, the "half" is a strange way to look at it. Likely means the other half were admitted with no testing or the scores were below the 1010 and 19 which says, you will not likely graduate but thanks for the money.

That, does not scream FBS, sorry but no.

Ranking FCS recruiting classes is almost impossible.

A stadium just means a team is playing there. Don't read too much into it.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NC...l_stadiums

New football/basketball venues, fast-growing state, mid-pack CAA budget just explains why they moved up to the CAA (i.e. they checked boxes). It's not meant to mean it's impressive or anything - just that it was modest enough to move up.

I've actually thought about this cause I noticed it. I think it's likely someone on Campbell's staff just has contacts to ensure their recruits receive basic ratings, most fcs players arent ranked.

And Wake Forest not that far away either.

Had Wake Forest University not left the Town of Wake Forest back in the 1950s, we'd have 4 FBS teams in the same TV market, with ECU 13 miles away from being the 5th.

You are correct, and that makes a whole lot of sense.

Edit: looking at 247, it seems like Campbell is landing a number of recruits with FBS offers at schools like Alabama and Georgia. That is quite surprising if accurate. It's equally surprising this hasn't translated to FCS playoff success yet.

I have a hard time believing this is accurate. If it did, something is going on. NIL, academics, walk on offers, something is weird about this.

Campbell-- What's going on??*

I honestly thought THIS about the POST Title...

The OP is wandering WHY they are ONLY 8-14 combined the last two years DESPITE all the highly rated players and facility improvements!

I knew about the players and facilities 2 or 3 years ago and have wandered WHY they are not winning. If their players are THAT good it should be no problem playing .500 ball at the fcs level.

*But this is probably just another example of a (soon to be) P5 poster not knowing the latest happenings in G5 or fcs.

And yet I specifically asked about what they have done to get into the Colonial and not simply football on-field performance the past two years. They have a higher ranked recruiting class than a good number of G5 schools; that is anomalous for a program like Campbell and begs a discussion on - get this - a football message board.

RE: Campbell Camels...what is going on?
Campbell is a small Baptist school that is surrounded by other small programs. The school has campuses at Camp Lejeune, Fort Bragg, and Raleigh (Law School) campuses.

Fayetteville State University, Methodist University, UNC-Pembroke,... The other way is NC State, UNC, Duke, NC-Central... All have football programs.

Someone felt the school would benefit by adding football.
