They've had Mike Minter, a well known Carolina Panthers player, as football head coach for a decade. His tenure is generously described as less than mediocre with just three winning seasons during his ten year tenure. But they were invited to the Colonial, where they do not appear to be a strong institutional fit and don't appear to enhance football competitiveness. And now two years in a row, they appear to have the #1 recruiting class in FCS.

In the Austin Peay thread, someone mentioned that Campbell may well have FBS aspirations. Is that likely?

Regardless, what is going on at Campbell that has allowed this sudden rise to the Colonial and landing top FCS recruiting classes despite not even having made the FCS playoffs in their history?
That was me.

Let me clarify: It's not inside information whatsoever. It's just where I could see their trajectory taking them.

I'd say it's a bit harsh to call Campbell "unremarkable." My father in law graduated from their trust management school and had a freaking stellar career. Got his Master's from Northwestern. They have pharmacy, osteopathic medicine, law, engineering, and a seminary. The seminary was all the had until the 80s.

Athletically, they went from no football to non scholarship to scholarship to CAA to #1 FCS recruiting class. They just seem like they're on the rise.

Anyway, I'm not *predicting* they will go FBS. I'm saying that if a private school does it, I would think Campbell is the most likely. But there is quite a lost of public schools I would expect to go FBS before I'd predict Campbell.

Fayetteville State University, Methodist University, UNC-Pembroke,... The other way is NC State, UNC, Duke, NC-Central... All have football programs.

Someone felt the school would benefit by adding football.

A small baptist school from the south playing football against northeast publics like Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Albany, Stony Brook, Townson, Delaware, etc makes little sense. Highly doubt those school I mentioned were happy with their add. I dont see how they benefit the football CAA at all. The northern CAA football members have to be looking to break away. I dont know where Monmouth falls since its a private but Im sure West Long Branch, NJ has little in common with where Campbell is located. Richmond and Elon are probably the only schools happy with their add.

I think part of it is their coaches are prioritizing star rankings over everything else, partly to get some splashy headlines/generate hype.

A lot of FCS level guys are unranked, so it falls on the coaching staff to find studs that other people are missing.

Over the past few years, WM has landed a few 3* recruits, but none have really made an impact here.

Personally, I also thought they were a weird/bad add to the CAA.

They weren't added for football. They were added because UNCG couldn't be landed and the southern schools needed a #7. I would have gone with Winthrop but Campbell won the day.

In 2023 Campbell has 9 games in North Carolina, one in South Carolina, two in Virginia, and one up north against Monmouth (506 miles).

The CAA has lost a lot of schools, they appear to be backfilling.

Elon started off as a small Christian school in rural NC too, look at them now. Campbells demographics will change as did Elon's as they compete up and down the east coast.

Elon College was founded by the Christian Connection, which later became a part of the United Church of Christ. The charter for Elon College was issued by the North Carolina legislature in 1889.
