Question 2023 UT Softball Thread
I see that UT got a commit over the weekend from Eliana Enriquez, a JUCO Infielder from Sacramento, CA. Interesting.
https://athletics.sierracollege.edu/spor...liana_f2oz

Coach is originally from California, but she has been East since signing to play at Michigan St, but she must still have some contacts out west. The previous soccer coach brought a number of players to Toledo from California, but not many of them were impact players. Maybe SB will do better.

UT starts off with a win. They were down 1-5 in the 5th. 3 walks, a single, then a grand slam lead to a 6-5 win

Pitching wasn't very good for UT, but it was the first game. Bellarmine was 1-23 in their conference last season. Hope this team can find some pitching. You need two good ones to win the MAC.

Rockets lose game 2 to Presbyterian. LP was Hunt, who at one time was one of the better pitchers in the MAC, but has had injuries.

Stopped by Scott Park yesterday. The new press box is done on the outside. Colored concrete block, two story with storage on the bottom. Very nice, but not super fancy. Better than anything the program has ever had. New scoreboard too. Much nicer than the old one,but no video or graphics.

Win by Hunt. Unfortunately, she's the only dependable pitcher we have. In fact, since Kristen Butler, we haven't been able to recruit a quality pitcher. Hunt transferred from Hillsdale with the last coach. I hope the new pitching coach can find a good one among the current pitchers, or develop one.

Rockets win double header against BG played indoors! Good pitching for Toledo. Not sure how good BG is.

Tweet from UT Softball, playing at Buffalo today:

Quote:B2: due to the extreme winds, the left fields wall has fallen over, and there is a delay in the game right now
TOL 1
UB 3

Well, that's not good. Looks like now they have cancelled the game.

RE: 2023 UT Softball Thread
Why does Buffalo play home games before April? There's no warm destinations in the MAC, but I bet UB, Kent, Akron, WMU, CMU, and EMU have had more canceled games in their history by 2x than the other 6 MAC teams.

It's the same with the MLB. Play the first two weeks at warm weather places, and play 2 weeks in July or August up north. There's roughly a split in warm weather for April 1st, and basically too hot for July 28th.

Toledo baseball played today at home with wind gusts up to 50mph. Lots of home runs. There has long been an argument for playing baseball in the fall. No wonder all of the top teams are in warm weather states.

Responding to my previous post. Got swept this weekend by a not very good Akron team. Still paying the price for poor recruiting of pitchers. With Hunt gone next year, some freshmen are going to have to show up big. I think only one recruit is a true pitcher. If a scholarship or two would open up, maybe we could pick up a transfer or two.

RE: 2023 UT Softball Thread
A few more thoughts as the season winds down. UT is in 7th place in the MAC and out of the league tournament with a 12-13 record. Considering that we are down to two pitchers it's almost a miracle that we have been competitive with every other team in the MAC.

Erin Hunt has the lowest ERA in the league and Sophia Knight has shown she has a good future. What happened to Madison McKay, I can't say. With a team that needs more pitching help, she has only pitched 13 innings all season, and I don't think she has taken the mound in at least a month.

Next season will be pivotal for the pitching staff. With stallwart Hunt gone, three incoming freshmen will be counted on to help immediately. Local superstar Mady Yackee, from Springfield HS, currently has a 14-0 record with a 0.58 era. She's also batting .472. The leader of the state's second-ranked D1 team, she's a two-time first team all-stater and certain to get a third.

Jenna Bloomfield, from Gibsonburg (OH) HS, Is a power pitcher and hitter. She currently has a 9-4 record with a 1.34 era. Also a third baseman, Bloomfield is hitting .474. She had 16 home runs as a sophomore. She was first team all-state last season.

Huron (OH) High School's Eliza Maloney missed last season with a knee injury, but has come back strong her senior year. With a 10-2 record and a 0.82 era, the all-state pick has been dominant on the mound. Her .600 batting average also stands out.

I found myself wondering when reading about the Springfield-AW game recently if Yackee was signed or simply committed...I hope she is locked tight because her stat-line and overall ability is definitely something a lot of higher level college teams would find attractive to fill a hole late in a class.

She is signed. I think the main reasons some schools didn't recruit her is that she's 5-4. Big schools like pitchers 5-9 and above. I think she will do great at Toledo, hopefully to a title.

A few of the Rocket softball players participated in a softball tour of Australia with other DI players. Great opportunity for them.
