Well this means 1 thing Kent State has to win the MAC tournament or it isn't going to the NCAA tournament regardless of being worthy or not.

The last 3 games will be a 100x more important then the first 18 now in the MAC.

I’m not disappointed that we lost a MAC game. I’m disappointed we lost to this team and in how we played. Giving up 80+…Sheesh!

At the end of the day, we played like we have been reading the press clippings. Like they would just roll out the balls and we would beat NIU no matter what. We aren't that good. If we don't play with fire or an edge, we will lose to anyone (just proved that).

No, the team isn't THAT good. To win they have to hold the opponent to a shooting percentage in the low 40s. NIU hit 51.9%. I didn't see or hear the game, so I don't know if the defense was sub-par, NIU was just shooting well even while defended, or a combination of both.

Yes, caught that and was wondering why one guy would have a mask on while crammed in there.

I may be in a minority of one, but I hate the conference tournament. It would be OK if the regular season winner were assured of a spot in the NCAA tournament and the tournament served to get an additional team in, but that isn't the case. That hasn't happened since 1999. Now you play all these games and all it takes is an inferior team to get hot, or a superior team to have a key injury and none of it mattered. All anyone remembers is who won the darn tournament.

Yup, sucks but one team riding a hot hand and/or nursing a banged up one cancels anything done over the course of 18 games. Life of a program in a one-bid conference.

RE: Kent State @ Northern Illinois
I see your point Muskrat, always have. But a few things stand out to me:

1 - Lets be real. This is a DARN GOOD Kent State Team. There is no doubt they are among the best in the MAC. I think we all knew that some of the talk/coverage was far fetched...and thats fine, I mean, we were banking quite a bit on 3 LOSSES (and several wins no doubt). Its all fun stuff. But put the NCAA Tournament where it belongs. Winning the regular season MAC Crown is a big deal. It ain't easy and nobody can take it from ya when you do.

2 - The MAC Tournament is freaking fun. Yeah, it stinks to go in there as the number one seed and come up short. But hey. Give me a couple nights of martinis and bar food at Flannerys and some MACTION in Downtown Cleveland and let the chips fall where they may.

3 - I am pretty sure nobody is hoping to see Kent State on Thursday March 9th or Friday March 10th.

All true Fallsdog, except that it seems nobody remembers who won the regular season or cares, except of course the team who did it and its fans. I really didn't feel that strongly about it until last season. Certain losses tend to stick with me, such as last season's fiasco surrounding the Akron game, and that loss to OU in the 2000 tournament. Oh, well. We shall see what we shall see, as my father always said. Long way to go.

The 2000 Loss to Ohio University. A Thursday night quarterfinal if I remember? Yep. I remember that ballgame well.

No, it was Sunday March 5th. KSU had a first-round bye. All four quarterfinals were on the same day. By the time KSU and Ohio started it was really late. The game had several swings with the Flashes coming back from big deficits twice. The second time was all Huffman, who couldn't miss. He hit two free throws with seconds to go to give the Flashes a 68-67 lead. OU hurried downcourt and ET tied up someone, but OU had the alternate possession. Sanjay Adell drove the lane and scored. The Flashes called time out with a second or so to go and a long pass failed to get a good shot. I remember two quotations that stick with me. Huffman was quoted as saying about his one-man comeback, "I waited too long." incidentally, that was the first game he started in his career. Waters praised the seniors on OU for their play and said, "Our senior did nothing" because Whorton had probably his worst game and scored little. Almost 23 years and that game still sticks in my craw for some reason.

You’re right. That 2000 loss still hurts. I believe Kyrem Massey got hurt a week or so before and we weren’t quite the same team. Probably the best team in the MAC that year. The 2012 OT loss to Akron still stings too (Justin Greene fouls out at end of regulation on BS call).

I know I’m in the minority on this but i wish the MAC regular season Champ got the auto bid. Go ahead and play the MAC tourney. Look at it as more games for the MAC Tourney winner to show they belong in the big dance (if the winner is not the regular season champ). Never gonna happen…just my “frustrated thoughts.”

I like the tournament. Just wish there was some path for mid major regular season champions who lose in the tournament to get priority over also rans in the bigger conferences. Maybe reserve 4 at large bids for this reason or something.
