Kent State @ Northern Illinois
The Golden Flashe (16-3, 6-0) head west to take on Northern Illinois in Dekalb this Tuesday. Tip off from the Convocation Center is set for 8PM EST, 7PM Central.
Northern Illinois is 3-3 in MAC Play and 7-12 on the year. This is a game the Golden Flashes should win. If they remember to pack their defense and keep every bit of their focus on win #17...they will.
NIU's best wins appear to be a 10 point road victory over Indiana State and a 20 point drubbing of Central Michigan. I say this knowing very little about McKendree and Purdue Northwest, two squads that the Huskies defeated early in the season.
This game is all about Kent State. With each win, the target grows. I've even noticed the sisters are starting to throw stones at Kent State's character. To be expected I guess. Whatever the case, running this thing to 17-3, 7-0 seems to be well within the Flashes' reach. I don't know if Kent State will receive 8 votes, 9 votes or no votes. Don't really care. But I do know that a win on Tuesday would make Friday's home game that much more exciting.
Kent State 79
Northern Illinois 66
Elsewhere around the MAC on Tuesday...
Miami @ Akron
WMU @ Ohio
Buffalo @ Ball State (I like that Buffalo has two road trips this week! I assume they will go home after the game Tuesday night)
BG @ CMU
EMU @ Toledo (CBS Sports Network game)

I don't see us getting in with the schedule. Only MAC teams from here out. In 2008 we had a break in the conference schedule where we played and beat St. Peters which got us to #25.
Have we been in the Top 25 since?

They were ranked #30, with one having them 19th, one 21st, two at 22nd and two at 24th. KSU is actually ranked higher than North Carolina and Kentucky. Even if it's just for a week, who would have ever imagined being ranked ahead of those two?
I see they are now also ranked in the coaches poll, at 34th with 13 points. That poll, once upon a time known as the UPI is, to the best of my knowledge, not public like the AP so you can't see how the individual coaches made up their top 25s.

That’s game you refer to was “St Mary’s”…Great game late night out West! A Bracket Buster game… Loved those games (beating Creighton in Kent). Wish it still existed. Gives mid majors another opportunity for a Q-1 win.

It did, but it also guaranteed a loss to every second mid-major going down the list. The big boys won’t schedule midmajors, or if they do will never go on the road, so unfortunately these games were needed to get at least a quality game on the schedule, with a return game the following year.

I remember going to Anderson Arena the Saturday after Kent broke the top 25. Q was sick, BG was pumped and the Flashes fell from Grace quickly. But what great a memory with my Dad.
Anderson Arena was great.

Speaking of Bracketbusters, the Butler game was great. Tip was at 11 I believe. Haynes was cold blooded. Great stuff.

I was at that game too! Bill Livingston wrote a great article on it. That was a really good KSU team. Had Duke beat but let ‘em off the hook. Was a 9 seed in the Tourney and turned in a clunker vs. UNLV.

If Dave Carducci is out there somewhere I would love to hear his memories of the game at Cameron. I believe he brought a guest who I was friends with another life.

I was at that game. Amazing atmosphere and insane walking out of there with a sly smirk on my face. We also beat Creighton in Omaha (I was at that game, too.) Same feeling. Game at Duke and Kansas were a little different because we didn't win, but was equally proud walking out of Cameron and Phog. The other memorable road game was at STL where Al Fisher scored the last 28 for us and the GW with less than a second to play.

Oh yeah. The STL game was a big boy win. Al Fisher was freaking ice water. Creating your own shot is a skill. He had that skill.

I still remember Bill Needle’s radio call of “Al Fisher is an assassin!”
If I recall, we offered Fisher sight-unseen based on a relationship one of our coaches had with his JUCO coach. Anyone recall this as well?

Yeah, like a week before classes started because Korey Spates was kicked off the team. Fisher was all set to walk on somewhere. Siena maybe? Imagine how the team that lost him as this walk on last minute felt?

I do remember that. Al seemingly came out of nowhere…MAC POY! We’ve had a few of these type players. Trevor comes to mind…
Al also put a dagger in the Zips at their place with a 3 at the buzzer. Thought Nick Dials was gonna cry ?

I remember before Fisher's Sr year seeing an article on one of the national websites that said some of the best PG NBA prospects were playing at mid majors and the three players it focused on were Fisher, Patty Mills, and Steph Curry. Always been a bit sad he didn't get his shot. I believe he played threw an ankle injury during his Sr year that really hurt his first step. Mills and St Mary's got their revenge in the MACC that year in the game that was supposed to be a Fisher Mills showdown and turned into a surprising dual of big men between Omar Samham and Brandon Parks.

Yes! I sat next to an NBA agent who was there to scout Al (already sold on Mills). As you wrote, Al had a somewhat disappointing Senior season.
That was Big Brandon’s best game. He was (still is a mountain) and a very nice guy!
