No one’s saying WKU was left out because of their athletics. WKU is definitely up there with the top of the Sun Belt and would be a great addition in that respect. Tyson Helton is a fabulous coach. The point was just that the Sun Belt did turn them down when they approached about rejoining during the realignment talks. It was for a vendetta, without doubt, but it still shows a shift in power to have them ask to come back. I’d love to have them join the Sun Belt, if even just to have the Helton Bowl every year.

Neither of these two statements is true.

I think you are not looking at the logistics of scheduling the games they need to fulfill their CBS/ESPN contract. 9 conference members means every conference week has either a bye, three byes, or a member having an OOC game. But transitioning to midweek games also often requires a bye in the preceding round. It is a scheduling headache.

I presume they have a plan for how they will handle it next season, but it will become a lot more straightforward once they have their 10th football member.

They've got a plan to schedule with the superior 9 for next season, but they "needed" a 10th?

Nah. ...

It's quite plausible that in coming up with the plan to schedule with the 9 they have that they realized what a royal PITA it would be to have to schedule that way every year ... organizing your schedule around one of the 9 having a home Saturday OOC game in the last weekend in September and none of your other schools being scheduled OOC in the last weekend in September is not an easy or straightforward scheduling process, and being able to do it once doesn't mean you want to have to do it every year on an ongoing basis.

But you have to have that home game to meet the CBSSN September programming commitment, and you need a minimum of four conference home games on Tuesday and Wednesday every week of October to meet the ESPN/CBSSN midweek October game scheduling commitment.

Right.

Or that's not a thing at all. 100 years of football scheduling by hand and computer have got it covered.

Heck, with 10 you've got to schedule around who misses whom each year. That's a worse scheduling problem than bye weeks. Much worse from a competitive standpoint. Even if the planning isn't so bad.

Neither issue is as bad as playing a month of weeknight games to begin with, but that's a bed they made for themselves (even if it was the "best" possible deal as far as money was concerned).

I'd feel more strongly about this if I was FIU (stuck with 5 weeknight games in the 9 team schedule), but bye weeks are ok. Actually pretty important with all the games changing days of the week (we'll be really glad of our October off week this season).

My main point here is "this one guy on the internet thinks the math might be kind of annoying" isn't the same as "they needed."

We didn't "need" a tenth team. We got stuck with one (or chose to add one for other reasons and maybe this was lagniappe for anyone who didn't like the scheduling math with 9).

Exactly. WKU isn't a bad program. Turning down any school who wanted back in after leaving 8 years earlier is a sign of the SBC getting better.

I don't think it's as much of a vendetta thing as everyone makes it out to be. There's probably some hard feelings, but WKU was the "first team out" for SBC expansion in 2021. Had Marshall, ODU, and JMU decided to stay in CUSA, WKU was going to join the SBC.

Just in case anyone wants a link, for proof that WKU was the backup option: https://www.actionnetwork.com/ncaaf/coll...erence-usa

Right, for over 100 years, college football conferences have been scheduling around media contracts requiring multiple midweek games on Tuesday and Wednesday for a month.

Sure, and I have rights to a bridge between San Francisco and Marin County I am able to offer to an interested party. This thing could be like owning a "gateway to a gold mine"!

If the Sun Belt is going to expand it will definitely not be with APSU. I'd 1,000% rather have La Tech in the West and WKU in the East.

It's not rocket surgery. For 100 years we've been scheduling with odd numbers of teams. With Bye weeks.

You don't "need" ten teams to make it work. Maybe the math is easier, but that "easier" math works against you when it comes to dividing the money (and the travel). They decided to do it, but they didn't have to and I can't imagine "oh no, what do we do about the calendar, it's so hard" was remotely a factor in the decision making (as much as I disagree with the call). That's just a by-product. Not much of one to me, maybe more meaningful to others, but certainly not a "need."

Pretty much, yeah.

Good for y'all then.

14 schools with great fanbase support and great rivalries. And Marshall doesn't ever have to go to Texas like they did every other week in their old conference? Sounds like a dream.

Marshall football only has to travel to Texas for 1 game every 7 years.

Think they'll be ok with that?

What are you trying to bait with that question? Look in CUSA we had SIX teams over 1000 miles away from us. In the SBC we only have ONE team over 1000 miles away. Just drop it. 05-stirthepot

Yeah, on Saturdays.

Quote:You don't "need" ten teams to make it work. Maybe the math is easier, but that "easier" math works against you when it comes to dividing the money (and the travel).

There is basically no money, and Atlanta is an easier trip than pretty much anyone they're replacing on the schedule. Travel costs aren't a factor at the P5 level, but I think travel and scheduling inconvenience are a factor below that level.

Especially when you remember who's the one wrestling with the challenges of making that schedule work? The coneference office and the ADs. The ones making the decision.

EDIT: Akkshually, if the contract is for four Tuesday-Wednesday games a week, then you can have two teams on a bye week each week. Which means skipping a mid-week road trip.

That's what I'm saying!

Every single week in CUSA y'all had to travel to Texas. That had to be awful. Now you can play most games in West Virginia. That's awesome.

Enjoy it!

Amazingly, nobody complained about Texas travel when we were playing ranked Houston teams with NFL-prospect QBs on ESPN. You can figure out the rest.

We've had this out before. You don't know that Atlanta is an easier or cheaper trip than what we'd have otherwise (just as I don't know that it isn't).

And once again, more is more and less is less. I'm not claiming that we're missing out on millions here. But less money is less money and less money is worse than "not less" money generally speaking.

Best I can tell, it seem so to be for 20 games (more or less in October) from T-F.

Ugh. Wanted to throw up just typing that.

So next year (with 9) some of us only have 4 total, and others have 5. That really sucks for whoever got the extra mid-week home game.

I assume (without having seen the contract) that starting the next year, it'll be a more straight-forward 4 games per team (and probably 2 home/2 away). 03-puke

The math is easier, sure. But I don't have any sympathy for the ones doing the scheduling. It can be done. Bye weeks are fine. Kind of helpful when you're moving the day of the week all the time (they supposedly try to take the short weeks into account and not give a Thursday night one week and a Tuesday the next to anyone - although we got one like that).

Campbell isn't the most likely private school in NC to try. Elon would be more likely.

Austin Peay is what would happen if Austin Powers and Olive Oyl had a baby.
