I just don't think we played like crap. We shot it poorly. For me there is a huge difference between playing poorly and missing a few more open shots than you normally would.

That's a great way to put it. You could/can win with Andy, but you won't win because of Andy.

Inconsistent shooting, they aren't good at getting the the line, they only have one guy who scores efficiently around the basket. On defense, their backups aren't very good. They have lapses where they don't grab the ball very well.

Mark you're the eternal optimist here. From what you see, is UC on the right path with Wes Miller? Does the coaching and talent look like its progressing enough to think Wes can make UC competitive in the Big12.

I think we are on the right path for what he was hired for but the path took a sharp turn up a very steep hill with the B12 invite. Next year could be the slaughter of the innocent making people wonder why he got an extension and a doubling of salary 40 games into his tenure.

I haven't been super impressed with some of the personnel decisions and X's and O's. I was flabbergasted to hear him say that we had a bad week of practice and weren't ready to play Memphis at home on national TV. That's inexcusable and the buck stops with him.

I'm weary of how we prepare and start off in games against teams that don't stink. It's great that we fight back later in those games but something is very wrong with this staff's approach.

247 has Jizzle at 58 and Rayvon at 60 nationally. Not Joe Burrows, but pretty damn good.

I will admit that I have not watched every second of every game this year. So, this opinion might be completely uninformed. I look at the Cats, and see a couple players who have some potential, but I see no one who would crack the line up of some of our better teams from past years. I guess what I am saying is what did people expect with this group? Personally, I expected what I have seen. We need dudes. We don't have any. It is going to come down to how many dudes Wes can convince to come here. It is obviously going to take a couple years, unless we hit the lottery in the portal for next year.

It's mixed. I think we have three guys that would have started for a lot of our Mick teams. None would have been the guy, but they'd have played.

DDJ could have been a better version of the 2018 Justin Jenifer role, for example. Landers probably doesn't start on that team because it has Cumberland and Evans, but he would have started on many of the other teams. Vik is definitely a starter on most our past teams.

The problem is once you get past those guys. Ody is trying to play the roll of Junior year Tre Scott, only he's not even as good as Sophomore year Tre Scott (who was a bench guy asked to just give some minutes behind Clark).

MAW is having a really nice senior year. He's a 2nd guard off the bench on most of our teams once Mick got it rolling.

JD is a heat check 10-15 minutes a game guy off the bench on our best teams.

Skillings is freshman year keith williams...plenty of talent, but not ready yet. Hopefully he makes a big leap.

Reed is the kind of guy Mick never had to play early, but would start contributing as a sophomore and be a big time contributor when he's an upper classman.

The rest of the roster wouldn't play on any of our past teams once Mick got it rolling.

If you look at the Memphis game, Landers, DDJ and Vik all had damn good games and we're ready to play at that level. The other guys all struggled.

That's the difference with this team. We have 3 NCAA tournament team caliber starters...and 3 veterans who ideally would be your 7th or 8th best player in 10-15 minute bench roles. Two freshman who give you flashes but aren't here yet. And then nothing on the back end.

Saw an interview with Huggins where he talked about his love for Juco's. I would love to see UC go back to the Juco's and grab kids who love to rebound IMO.

If you watch JUCO basketball nowadays, it's nothing like what it used to be...there are maybe 5-10 impact players in the NAIA/JUCO ranks now, whereas you could find 25-30 in a give year way back when. It is exceptionally hard to not qualify, and with over 330 D1 teams, almost every decent player ends up at a school. The transfer portal is essentially the new JUCO route at this point.

What you articulated here is what I've heard in recent years. Huggins was masterful at building those early teams with J.C. guys and the results were impressive. But the window of opportunity for obtaining talent that way has closed for a variety of reasons.

Nobody flunks out these days. For most schools, there are no longer any university admission standards. The SAT is a thing of the past. The colleges admit whomever they want. The kids have “tutors”. They take classes on-line. The classes are on social Justice and Kinesiology (weightlifting) and Hip/Hop. You won’t get a “C” or anything below. When is the last time you heard of a scholarship basketball player flunking out of school?

Yeah, Juco is for kids who were waaaay under the radar of guys who barely made it out of HS due to lack of interest.

One year prep schools filled the void for most of those.

I completely gave up on JUCOs when Rashawn Fredericks was heralded as an All-American coming into the program but could barely dribble a ball during his one year in Clifton.

The last I saw I think our own admission standards are over 80%. I think that is just the main campus so the rest are hidden in UC-Blue Ash or Clermont. Basically if you have a pulse you are in. That's why I think it is just a matter of time until Cincy Tech will be absorbed into UC to get to that 60K enrollment they want by 2030.

If you go to Cincinnati State and get your 2 year associates you get into UC if you wish. They have an agreement in place since Zimpher was here.

The state would never let the only public CC in Cincinnati go away.

I agree with this, but I could see an arrangement set up where they are a part of UC, but not the students are not "full" UC students until they have met certain course requirements. It would still be a CC but with a clearer path to a Bachelors degree from UC if desired. Potentially a win all around for the students and the university as their would be more of a curriculum alignment and some professor crossover.

That type of arrangement you described could be workable. I doubt that a Research I university such as UC feels its profile is enhanced by absorbing a tech-focused community college.

When UC obtains the NCI Cancer Center designation and fully realizes the Digital Futures/1819 Hub development it will reach another milestone in the research world. I'm not sure how absorbing Cincinnati State squares with the current aspiration of continuing to build a world-class university.

I just don’t see how else there are going to grab 12k new students with Ohio demographics in such a short period of time.

That's where I think it makes the most sense. They could keep the Cincinnati State name and a separate student designation, and continue using it as a community college but also as a way to improve UC's admission metrics by admitting the borderline students into Cincinnati State and making them earn admission through classroom performance. This would weed out students that aren't really committed to getting a degree, improve UC's minimum/average admission numbers, and likely their graduation numbers (as a percentage).

Bolded, I agree with that. The infrastructure on the hilltop wouldn't seem to support it. The Straight Street area is going to be so dense when built out, I can't even imagine the traffic/pedestrian safety issues. And independently built student housing that ends up in UC's control because of unscrupulous financing, poor construction quality, or bad management only adds to the University's expense. We saw it last fall at those Deaconess units that flooded when UC students had to be housed in the Hampton Inn and Fairfield Inn properties.

UC will open a new classroom/office complex in the fall at Clifton Court. But then the former McMicken Hall will need major renovation, Old Chem annex will be demolished and reimagined, and then Crosley will come down. Where do you put 12,000 + more students? As we know, UC can't annex a nearby cornfield as other large universities do.
