RE: Pac12 fires two senior executives for failing to report overpayments by media
The President of the Pac 12 Networks Mark Shuken started in September 2017 and its CFO Brent Wilman started in a lesser capacity in 2011.

The buried audit was completed in the Spring of 2017 under the prior Pac 12 president Lydia Murphy-Stephans. Which may explain why she announced her decision to leave the P12N on April 20, 2017.

These two guys were made aware of the audit by late December 2017, ignored it and went full steam ahead on the overbilling.

The timeline makes me suspicious that Larry Scott knew and approved this criminal enterprise.

Lydia orders the audit. When it comes back, she tells Larry that she won't cover it up. Either he comes clean with the member schools or she will resign.

He accepts her resignation, hires Shuken, tells him about it and tells him to continue the overbillng.

Plausible, right? So what did Larry Scott know and when did he know it?

We all knew the PAC 12 Networks were not in great shape.

Somehow, it was worse than we thought.

Counting on fingers, 2016, 17, 18, 19. Four years, $50M. $12.5M per year.

Ex-Fox Sports exec Bob Thompson also thinks it's Dish.

Yeah, pretty obvious it was Dish since their recent complaint matched directly with the shenanigans (and their consequences) Kliavkoff acknowledged on his way out of the office Friday afternoon.

That was my logic, but it's nice to have a pro publicly say that what makes sense to me and you is actually probably the way it is.

These executives continued their employment under George Kliavkoff. They should have cleaned house and done a full audit in the transition.

If the PAC Network is a separate financial entity they could declare bankruptcy and not pay it. PAC Network is failing anyways, no bail out!

the questions now of who owes what and who has to pay what, will come up soon enough I guess.

Since it's the media deal, and that money goes to the conference, you're likely going to hear the schools say "not my problem", and when the conference asks the schools to help pay it back, I foresee a potential mass exodus or even dissolution on the horizon.

Saw someone on Twitter make a solid observation.

If the PAC 12 withheld this money from one company then what are the chances they held money from others? Did all of this recent upheaval behind the scenes trigger other distributors to perform more intense audits?

We all know Dish has had its struggles in recent years so I suppose they're more likely to notice the missing funds, but what if there are other revenue streams that have been overindulged here?

It's pure speculation at the moment, but it's something to think about.

with activist investors putting media companies' feet to the fire about costs of streaming, ota, etc., I would definitely imagine that companies are doing audits to find every last dollar.

Missing money that you could get to help keep the wolves at bay? Yeah, I can see that as a motivating force

If it is DISH it is conceivable that it is specific to satellite providers. The contract likely provided different rates for subscribers in Florida than those in Washington. A cable company is likely to be run as separate businesses for each system since those systems are being traded all the time.

Bad news for a conference that doesn't need bad news.

Maybe, but it also provides cover/opportunity for other companies to come out of the woodwork.

"Hey, I heard about that overpayment thing you've got going on. Incidentally, do you remember I sent someone last month to pay you back the $3 bucks I owed you? Could you check to make sure that you didn't ask for (and get) a five instead? Thanks."

The PAC has become a raging dumpster fire. Kliavkoff knew he was taking over a leaking boat but I don't think he realized the extent of the damage. I don't believe anyone here or anywhere else understood how bad it was either.

The failure to expand in 2010, resistance on multiple occasions to partner with ESPN on the Pac-12 Network, inability to strike and absorb the remainder of the BigXII when OUT declared they were leaving, the defections of USCLA, and now this. The PAC is for all intensive purposes a dead conference walking. It pains me greatly to see what has happened but it's over.

Larry Scott probably is the worst conference commissioner of all time. Worse than Karl Benson and Judy McLeod. At least those two didn’t have the resources the Pac-12 had and had to work with the little resources available to them at the time. Scott literally destroyed the Pacific 12 Conference.

It’s a shame such as fine conference, “the Conference of Champions,” is in the state they are.

Even John Swofford points at Larry Scott and says "at least I wasn't THAT bad".

That would be 'intents and purposes'. We'll see. The B12 hemorrhaged more teams in recent years than all other P5 conferences combined, yet the conference lingers as its fans still entertain fantasies of being giant killers.

03-lmfao I'm such a doofas at times, I wrote that on my phone at the barber shop. Thank you for the correction 04-cheers

The BigXII's strength has come from the ineptitude of the PAC and ACC to strengthen their positions. The ACC much like the PAC is living in the past. Neither conference seems to understand how to become viable long-term. The PAC has looked down on the academics of the schools in the BigXII for many years, this mentality will be the conferences downfall. Adapt or die.
