RE: Spring 2023 Football roster is up
Looks like we had 12 transfer out. How does that compare to other schools, number wise? Seems like a lot of players transferred last year.

That number doesn't make sense based on that long list of 2022 players that are no longer on our roster.
Looks like 12 transferred to confirmed schools but a lot more players transferred and just didn't get picked up by another school.

Some guys just quit. That happens every year.

Yeah, you have guys who transferred with a school in mind and then you have the guys sitting in the portal or waiting to go FCS. I imagine there's another 5-10 guys who just haven't found a home or committed to play in '23.

I would think that means we might still see a couple more added.

Transfer portal will be the end of G5 schools.
G5 schools have access to the portal just like everyone else.
But keeping strong quality players is a lot tougher. esp for a conference like ours.
Hammock has found a way to beat that….don’t recruit any strong, quality players.

Acevedo up the 214 lbs. He was pretty light last year. Some bulk will do him good.

I noticed there were very few weight gains overall. That's unusual but I have no idea if it was on purpose. Acevedo's was one that stood out. Also Ripperda put on 20lbs. But I'm fine with having lighter, athletic players.

The O-line and defense were pretty much manhandled last year. I'd like to see a little weight gain so the players won't get pushed around and knocked over like bowling pins.

Ester and O’Malley are as big as they are gonna be, and that’s not big. And those are the starters so we are kinda stuck there. Thomas put back on the weight he lost last year. Not sure that’s good. 270 LB D-ends are great vs the run, but more important they need to get to the QB. Haberman is the only 300LB D-tackle…and he’s 303. It’s kinda the opposite of previous regimes who had bigger tackles and smaller ends, it’s now smaller tackles and bigger ends. I’d also say the O-line is a bit lighter as well. But Nygra is up to 295 so that’s good. They have an entire summer to eat….

Above average with a touch of irony.

Did a reporter or anyone at the media day or fattys event ask Hammock why he thinks his entire running back room left ?

He's not going to get into any personal business of those guys and in today's world of unlimited free transfers and the pursuit of nil money, that's ultimately where this all goes. Guy wanted to go somewhere else, we wanted him to stay, he chose God's plan and went elsewhere.
How do you argue with God's Plan?
Honestly, I think we need to let it go. Most programs have transfer issues these days and NIU is no different than anyone. Why so many RBs? Probably because we had a lot of good RBs and they all wanted their own space. Which, with how the rules are structured now...they're entitled to.

I agree that the depth at RB is why there were so many transfers, but it begs to ask - why did these kids come here to begin with? Did they all think they could be #1 within one camp? If you’re looking for playing time immediately I’d suggest not choosing a location with the best RB in the conference who is only a sophomore.
I guess that’s what the portal does….makes kids think “if I’m not immediately satisfied with my role I can always just go somewhere else.”

RE: Spring 2023 Football roster is up
I think there is an old article out there that listed mph of guys on the field for us a few seasons back…and Hansen was in like the top 5.
I think the huskie, as it was, is the dumbest thing NIU has done on defense. Maybe this season the huskie gets a clear goal. And Hansen isn’t an awful choice.
Of the 4 listed? I guess Hansen is the best. Maybe Lafayette can get faster? Myles is too small for LB, so huskie it is?
The defense will have some improvements. Highly productive LB transfer and a productive safety.
I know there are a few freshman hammock is high on. So let’s see how this plays out.
Offense will be fine with rocky.

Hansen’s issue isn’t top speed, it’s lateral quickness. Though I do recall some RB just roasting him in a foot race down the sideline. But his quickness will be sufficient at LB/HSKY. He just couldn’t recover in deeper coverage when a WR had any kind of running start.

God's Plan = Go to the place where they say the best things about you and then go to the next place that starts to say nice things about you and then go to the next place that says nice things about you.
