I wonder if anyone up top at NIU realizes how big a turn-off over-indulgence in DEI activities like this really is, even for people who grew up largely respecting the Golden Rule. Seems like once this iteration got going, they don't know how to control it. Or don't mind it taking over the academic-research mission of the university.

Many long-time donors, such as myself and others I know, have stopped contributing to almost anything NIU does. As for attendance, just the possibility of being pushed around with this content has stopped some people from attending events. For those who do attend, it's go-watch-leave. Fewer are sticking around to talk with university people (when they can be found).

And with the "woke and broke" trend hurting business, I wonder how many corporate entities are backing away quietly, or staying away, from becoming tied to NIU. Even a big company like Disney went woke, got pounded and reversed course. I can't see it being different for smaller entities.

This is a long way from a leaky roof, but it does concern athletics if people don't take a second look ... or drop the first look they had.

This trend is not only at NIU but also at many universities.

The world of academia has gone completely berserk.

This is the result of perpetual navel gazing, coupled with a lack of concern for the economic conditions that foster social divides.

NIU needs to bring back Porn Week at the University Center. In the 1970s, Porn Week was a celebration of porn for several days at the University Center. We had the opportunity to view porn movies and attend workshops presented by porn stars. I kid you not.

RE: Roof Leak at WBB Game Tonight
The bottom line in most institutions is - maintenance isn’t sexy. Noone ever got their picture taken at a ribbon cutting for the repaired roof, the fresh tuckpointing or upgraded electrical service.

Anyone who has prepared a capital maintenance budget and has sat through the subsequent budget hearings can attest to the sighs and eye rolling of the administration when these matters are discussed. I cannot tell you how many times in my career I heard “can’t we put this off for another year” despite all the charts and cost projections showing the negative ramifications and added costs of deferring the fixes.

it was much easier to put some money into the budget for a “sexy” project (like a new whatever) which has absolutely no chance of getting done. Do this for a couple of years to build up a budget reserve and then reallocate the money for repairs - “We were hoping that the new whatever would be online by now but that’s not gonna happen…. However, this means we now have the funds available in the budget to fix the ….” Funny how the administrators fell for this time and time again.

Yep. I saw “Deep Throat” there. It was great.

I wanted to bring in a footlong hot dog cart there, but NIU would not approve it. Can you imagine how much money I would have made? The ladies (and some gents) would have been lined up for blocks.

Not sure what this has to do with the Convo roof, but I'm all in. Not sure why they stopped it.

Things used to be hoppin..current leadership is gawd awful..woke freaks. Quit giving them money and let NIU just crumble and be a distant, great memory.

I was never a huge concert goer, but even in my time (mid- to late-90s) I saw:

Blues Traveler (w/ The Wallflowers)
Counting Crows
Primus (w/ The Melvins)
Fiona Apple
Henry Rollins (Spoken Word)
Jeff Dunham
Larry Reeb

And, after graduation I saw Rascall Flatts and Veruca Salt (at Otto's).

There might have been more but my memory is getting fuzzy.

Without an actual report with details, it's hard to guess whether when they patched that original leak, they also did a thorough roof "exam" and found nothing else, or if that repair was a one-off just to get it fixed and they stopped with that.

I sincerely hope that in duck tape-and-bailing wire budget mode, our vaunted university leadership did not cross fingers and hope for the best. I have heard reports that there is a ton of "deferred maintenance" around campus.

I also do not know if the Convo has even been re-roofed. It opened in 2002, so is going on 21 years old. If construction was typical (I don't recall watching it go up, much), construction was put under roof as soon as practical, so the roof is probably 1-2 years older.

A re-roof on a domed span is a big, costly job. And leaks can damage roof structure as well. They need the facility as vacant as possible for any major work. NIU cannot operate from leak to leak with a facility that houses five athletic programs, graduations and other events.

Based on typical attendance figures, the building was probably as vacant as possible.

Looks like repairs are underway. Should be good for the next game.

It is easy and probably wrong to blame the A.D., the athletic department or the NIU administration. The fault lies in too many people in Illinois want to ***** and moan about roads, bridges and other public facilities being in Disrepair but won’t pay the taxes needed for infrastructure upgrades.

STF is specifically in-charge of the Convo. I can't tell you the last time a larger name came to perform there. Thomas Rhett in like 2018/19?

How is it supposed to generate revenue if nothing else comes besides NIU basketball which clearly isn't setting records on attendance. Bring in more $$ and then there is more money for repairs? Makes no sense. Venue is basically rotting.

Yep, the AD needs to make his/her teams have safe and ready-to-go venues to play in. 100% a negative mark against the NIU AD, especially since it seems as if the issue has lingered for a while with no fix.

They changed his title to being in-charge of the Convo I think like 3 years ago? No one else to blame.
