More than likely the NFL turned him down

RE: Harbaugh staying at Michigan
IIRC, Harbaugh is making more at Michigan than all but about 10-12 NFL coaches, and a handful of college coaches.

He's in a very cushy position, no pressure to move anywhere.

Yes… because everyone wants to coach at that dumpster fire in Denver. When Corum decided to come back, Harbaugh was coming back.

Nothing wrong with testing the waters. He's coached in the NFL before. He's got Michigan rolling right now with a top returning QB and he's beaten his arch rival two years in a row.

So, TCU beats Michigan, Georgia kills TCU....Rumors float that the NFL is beating down his door, then this tweet.

Sure sounds like Boosters wanted Harbaugh's head after TCU loss and this is a PR play.

IMO we will be hearing the same sort of rumors next year at this time about Harbaugh. He will be in the NFL soon.

Huh??? If the money at Michigan wanted him gone, they would have done it after 2020. The NFL rumors happen every year, even when Michigan was mediocre and not beating the pants off of Ohio State.

The thing is that if I were Harbaugh (who *does* have leverage to find the exact perfect situation), I wouldn't be leaving Michigan unless (1) the job has effective GM powers a la Bill Belichick with the Patriots and (2) the QB situation is settled.

The issue, of course, is that few teams offer #1 at all, while open head coaching positions with #2 in place are very rare.

The Broncos job, for instance, might have very aggressive ownership that's willing to pay a ton of money for a new coach, but that franchise is handcuffed competitively for the next few years because they're both stuck with a rapidly deteriorating Russell Wilson AND they traded a ton of draft capital to get him.

The type of job that guys like Harbaugh and Sean Payton would rationally be jumping for would be if, say, the Chargers position came open. That's a playoff team with a star QB where the ownership *might* be disgruntled with the coach because of the perception that they've underperformed expectations compared to their talent. THAT is the job that the top available coaches would fall all over themselves for as opposed to a rebuilding job.

Yes that would easily be the best job available if they canned Staley, but I can't see Spanos paying a coach $15-20M.

So long as Harbaugh keeps beating the Buckeyes, his job security is rosy. That's THE metric at Meeechigan (and a very tall order the past 20+ years). Winning a NC would be nice but not expected/required.

Harbaugh is staying until he’s not. I have no connections other than my sister lives in Michigan, but I’m pretty sure that’s his plans.

Also, what job in the NFL which is open would be more attractive than staying at Michigan?

Michigan was clearly better this year than last year. They played very well against tOSU, not so well against TCU, but very nearly pulled that game out, too. Any booster with a lick of sense would think that making a 4 team CFP every year will get you a title or 2 eventually. Look at their record under harbaugh, it compares favorably with Moeller and Carr, minues the 1 title for Carr ofc. But at $7.2m a year, Michigan is getting a bargain for Harbaugh. I think he flirted with the NFL to get a raise, whether that raise was at UM or at an NFL team didn't matter.

3 guys who make a LOT more than Harbaugh but are no better coaches (certainly far worse in one case): Fake Cajun, Riley, and Mel Tucker. Tucker is 18-14 in 3 years at MSU and has a $95m contract. Riley inherited an OU juggernaut and mostly held the line, with perhaps a bit of slippage near the end, went to USC and improved them a lot, but he's certainly no better than Harbaugh. Harbaugh has been at Michigan for 8 years and the team has improved steadily, for that he gets a 5 yr $36m deal? I'd be pissed if I were him, too. He shouldn't have to flirt with the NFL to get paid comparably to his peers.

Just saw that the Chargers fired their OC and QB coach. Yeah, it's their fault that the defense couldn't hold a 27 point lead.

I agree with you Frank, and every few years a job becomes available that checks one of those boxes. Maybe it's Dallas with a Dak at QB that comes open or maybe Belichick decides to step away. Either way my belief is that we will continue to have these rumors surrounding coach Harbaugh because it's his desire to get back to the NFL and win a super bowl. So maybe it's next year or maybe three years from now but it will inevitably happen.
