Evee is an incredibly clutch shooter. He hits a 3 to give Rice an 81-77 lead.

UTSA starts fouling with 1:04 left. Rice leads 83-77. Mason to the line. He's had an adventure there tonight. And not a good one.

88-81 final. Beat the spread, even if it took OT.

good job to come back, but I'm not sure we can get down like that to the FAU Owls and survive later this year...

Gutty comeback. According to ESPN+ team Fiedler with the second recorded triple double in Rice history (Jason McKreith 2004).

RE: Basketball tonight
Rice is going to win this basketball game, somehow. 88-81. Massive night from Fiedler who had a triple double. Olivari and Evee hit the big shots to get us back in the game and to win us the game. And maybe most importantly, there's no quit in the group. That'll get you far in a balanced conference. Other than that, lotta negatives. Most of them are somewhere in this thread so no need to rehash them. Let's take the win and get better in the next one.

Meanwhile, in San Antonio, Evee with another shot that we just didn't need given the time and score. Takes a midrange jumper down 71-65 with a minute left. But UTSA misses the FT. Rice ball down 71-65 with 55 seconds left.

That's an understatement. Tonight was arguably Austin's worst game in 2 years. I'm shocked Lindsey kept her in as long as she did. She kept shooting despite the fact her shots were not even close to falling. She was a turnover machine. And she made some really poor judgement passes. Put simply, she almost cost us the game.

Really nice comeback after a horrendous first 15 minutes of the game when we could not get a shot to fall despite getting open looks. This team has to learn to square up defensively in the post and take a charge. UTSA lived in layup land and even when we fouled them, they were soft fouls. Nothing to deter them from driving over and over again.

On the positive side, Crosthwait had her best game of the year, by far, and first time since her Sophomore season, was aggressively looking for her shot. She also played very solid defense, including several steals. Quality all-around games from both Fisher and DJ, and Ennis spurred our comeback in the final 5 minutes of the first half.

I consider myself a bit of a Rice basketball historian, and I swear we had a 2nd player get a triple double a few years back. I definitely remember McKrieth's triple double (I was at that game). If someone didn't get a triple double maybe 6 or 7 years ago (or even 10 years?), someone came super close.

I'll do some research and figure out if I can come up with that stat line I'm thinking about. But regardless, congrats to Fiedler on that amazing accomplishment. I'll assume since I was at the women's game it was points, rebounds and assists, and I doubt very many 6-11 collegians have done that (maybe they got one with blocks as the third stat, but not points/rebounds/assists).

eta - maybe I'm confusing the Rice women with the men. Nancy Mulkey had one in 2019 that did include blocks. The Rice women have had two triple doubles. I don't know if I remember who had the first one for them.

I was at the men’s game and I tell you, my neck was sore from shaking my head for 37 minutes of basketball. But it was all worth it in the end.
