If we played an FBS opponent, I would agree with you, but we are playing a FCS/HBCU team again; although, they are Celebration Bowl contender and winner. They also left the MEAC and are joining the Colonial this year.

Yeah, I hear ya. I guess my point is that if it’s gonna be on ESPN+ (which makes sense), I just assume it be on a Saturday

Also aware that nobody cares about my opinion

RE: 2023 Football Schedule
I do because I agree. No weekday games if it isn’t on a true tv platform. I don’t expect our share of games to be on the big 3 ESPNs unless we get ranked, and that’ll probably be dependent on whether the opponent is ranked as well or it’s the p5 prostitution game.

We may be in the top market for CFB, but it has no correlation to UAB. Which is why we’ll be ESPN plus or nothing for the foreseeable future.

For curiosity, although all 4 are midweek games, Jax State has 4 ESPNU games.

CUSA’s new tv contract which makes them do the maction schedule for the entire month of October .

I was going to comment that CUSA has a ton of televised midweek games, but those are also the only games going on. There are 12 Week 1 Thursday night games happening when we are playing.

Every cusa football game is a midweek game from Sept 28 through the entire month of October. No Saturday games for anyone between Sept 23 and Nov. 4

It doesn’t work out for most people, but I plan on going to some JSU games that I wouldn’t otherwise be going to. Might even go to MTSU or WKU, depending on my schedule.

I have to be out there for marching band purposes. Will miss one that conflicts with UAB in late November. So, midweek games not all bad.

RE: 2023 Football Schedule
Comparing by using the opener in 2017 and the home opener at Protective to other season's games is not logical. Those two games had years of work and hype built into the attendance figures. Speculation about the effect that those two games had on average attendance and trying to make an argument about whether or not to have Thursday night games is fun. . Fun to discuss in this forum. I had a good laugh.
On another note, I am definitely excited for football and basketball seasons to start. I feel the excitement building. Can't wait to see the offense. Defense will be tough too.

Every one of the things you said I mentioned in my post. UAB's scheduling strategy doesn't allow for any other data to compare to. There hasn't been a Saturday home opener other than those two games since The Return and this year won't show us either.

If I have the time and boredom - one of these days I'll try to dive deeper into trends across our conference to see if there's anything - but there's certainly not enough data for UAB alone. In my anecdotal experience though, Thursday night home openers suck for trying to get new fans into the full experience. I don't mind a Thursday night game mid-season, but I think it diminishes the impact of the first home game.

But...on the flip-side, I'd rather have a 7pm Thursday kickoff than an 11am Saturday start.

RE: 2023 Football Schedule
Having friends and entire families attend the home openers can definitely create new fans. Some will enjoy following the team and become diehards. We want that. Thursday night allows new fans to attend without giving up their weekend. Weekends for many are jam packed with other events and family commitments.
The best face of UAB would likely be the full day of activities that surround a home game that starts mid afternoon. Fully engaged tailgating and fun activities and giveaways that will attract new fans. But anyone that can't attend due to those other events and commitments or just value their weekends differently will likely not become regular attendees.
What groups grow up to become diehard fans is a good marketing question. We should invest marketing funds to attract UAB students and faculty and employees. I think those groups have the highest rate of diehard conversion. Getting families with young children to attend helps keep the students, faculty and employees coming through those years. We need those with families to continue to buy their season tickets during the period when those families don't have any free time to follow the team.
Getting empty nesters to attend can also be good for further development into diehard status as they now have the time and money to follow UAB. Just my thoughts.

Maybe so, but I've already converted a couple of Alabama season ticket holders and a separate couple of Auburn season ticket holders to drop their tickets and buy UAB season tickets instead since Protective opened. And not because they came to a Thursday night opener - Thursday night is usually the games they don't get to because of having to take off work (for tailgating/pre-game) or needing to get back home and ready for work the next day.

I'd argue the group you are talking about are going to have a tougher barrier to entry for becoming regular attendees if it's so important to them to keep their weekends and other commitments already. The majority of our games happen during that time. I think what you get instead are people that are far more likely to come to one game a year when it's convenient to them as UAB Football won't compete with their existing priorities.

If they are able/willing to come on a Saturday, that part of the battle is already over for the next step.

But... I'd love to hear examples from fans on hear if they've found this not to be true for them.

...not sure how well they travel, but there obviously won't be as may visiting fans as A&M or State bring... ...however, I think the first game for Dilfer, along with the general 'buzz' of the first game of the season, should make for a decent growd.

NCA&T gets a % of the tickets they sell so you can bet they will be pushing tickets. I think with the Dilfer effect thrown in, it should be a solid crowd.

For those interested, Navy's official ticket re-seller is Seat Geek.

https://seatgeek.com/uab-blazers-at-navy...pm/5952279

In the lower bowl sideline sections, rows A-J are below the walkway and rows 1-29 are above the walkway.

RE: 2023 Football Schedule
Thought about making a thread about this but decided to just add it to the schedule thread.
We can make a thread if needed, but what is everyone's expectations for attendance this year?

We were either #1 or Top 3 in CUSA attendance the past few years with around 22-25k average.

With our new conference and new coach, do we think we will hit 28-30k average this year? That would be needed to be Top 3 in new AAC.
Like other schools, a boost of attendance helps when visiting teams bring a crowd. Visiting crowds that weren't in state HBCU's have been terrible.

Home Games:
-NC A&T: HBCUs usually bring a great crowd. Good thing about Thursday game is we are the only college game in the state, bad news is its a weekday game. But people maybe curious about Dilfer and come out.
- Louisiana: Saturday Night Game. Those who wanted to watch Dilfer but couldn't make it first game will be there. Only bad thing is Samford is at Auburn at the same time.
- USF: Those other teams east and west of us are either away or on BYE. This one could also see a large attendance.
- Memphis: As much as I am excited about the revival of the Battle for the Bones, I am afraid this will be badly attended. Bama and Auburn have 2 huge home games. What should have been THE Premiere Game in the state of Alabama, is now just 1 of 3. They did us no favors scheduling this game for this date.
- FAU: It's Homecoming and Herman is their coach. That should be an attendance bump. However Bama is playing LSU at home so we shall see when kickoff times will be.
- Temple: Unless we are getting close to 8 wins I can see this game being low attendance. I don't think those from Philly will be making the trip unless they turn things around.

NCA&T is one of three college games in the Metro on Thursday as BSC and Samford both play.

Forgot about that. But probably wont affect us too much considering their opponents.
