Kent State @ Eastern Michigan
Kent State (14-3, 4-0) travels to Ypsilanti for a 7:00PM contest against the Eagles on Tuesday. This is a big game for KSU. I am not sure Stan Heath's Eagles have enough juice to win 5 conference games. They have given up 100+ three times this season and from I what I saw on ESPNU on Friday....they've got some work to do. But, so do the Golden Flashes. A chance to get to 15-3, 5-0 in the MAC on the road can't be taken lightly. If Friday night's performance is any indication of how KSU travels, things will work out just fine at EMU. There are some really interesting and (I believe) accurate takes on the OU game thread. Allow me to nuke this cup of coffee and share some of mine:

The 2022 - 2023 Kent State Golden Flashes are a pleasure to watch. I have spent plenty of time lamenting the transfer portal and the new normal in college basketball. This team is truly an exception to what I perceive as wrong with NCAA sports. In the "Meet Kent State" article shared last week Coach Senderoff talked about how the team made a decision to be back this season after the "incident" and drubbing in the MAC Championship. Well, here we are in mid January and this team is playing (more importantly maintaining) a veteran brand of basketball. Pretty impressive.

There are five games left in January and it will be interesting to see where Kent stands after the CMU game. The only two road games in that stretch are at Eastern and NIU. 19-3, 9-0 is a real possibility heading into the Akron game.

That could be determined by post play. There are options in the paint. Although there is no seasoned post presence, it does appear that several guys are hungry enough to take advantage of their minutes and that Coach Senderoff is willing to mix things up when necessary. Hornbeak looks to be the most physical "big" on the team. Avoiding foul trouble is an obvious key. Odusipe is an interesting player. It looks like the staff believes in him. He started several games last year and has stuck around this season. Some nights maybe Akeem is called on to commit 4 good hard fouls and pull someone away from the basket for 10 minutes on the other end.

From there, the body types change but there are options for points in the paint and a defensive presence. Thomas, as mentioned in a post in a previous thread, has been tremendous. He brings athleticism and effort that you can't help but admire. I haven't watched Davis or Payton closely enough to comment but there was something else brought up on the last thread that makes a lot of sense. Jacobs oughta play closer to the hoop sometimes. He plays like a man. He has shoulders like a man and he never seems daunted. There are some real interesting lineup combinations with the squad. You saw that first hand on Friday.

I think its time to sit back and enjoy Sincere Carry. Kent State's opponents seem to paint him as the enemy, the national media has found him and KSU fans (myself included) have been quite critical of him at times this season. Why? Because he is the man. Lets not mistake his passion for anything but just that....passion. There are several reasons why Thomas and Jacobs combined for 34 points on Friday. One of them, no doubt, is the amount of time Coach Boals and company spent preparing for #3.

Kent State 82
EMU 67
The Flashes let them hang around for longer than they should, but find #15 in the southeastern part of Michigan.

GO FLASHES!

Great stuff Falls Dog! After watching Stan’s boys at Akron Friday nite, can’t imagine KSU won’t beat them on Tuesday.

Like your writing style and the opinions are pretty spot on also. I just happen to think that Hornbeak is the answer with maturity. He is still growing up. And you are correct in Thomas being a pleasant surprise. If our coach would have had him for several years, he would be NBA.

Flashes are finally getting some votes in the AP poll, 8 to be exact, but it’s a start and more than Ohio St., Iowa, and UNC are getting.

Thanks GFlash68. If I could be reincarnated as Terry Pluto, Elton Alexander or Dave Carducci, I would take it. Those three guys were always my favorite writers from November to March. I still enjoy reading Pluto.

With regards to Cli’ron Hornbeak…it is fun to watch a post player develop over the course of his college career. It would be a pleasure to see him stick around and accept a leadership role over the next couple years.

Our three losses are now #1, #6, and #18.

Odd. I'd been wondering for weeks why they weren't getting a single vote. Why now? Better late than never, I suppose.

Well those were two pretty solid wins this last week and we continue to not lose while our losses continue to climb in the standings.

I'd go with Hal Lebowitz being my favorite. You're doing great stuff, fallsdog.

Because the big boys are starting to lose some conference games and we haven’t. Those polls are pretty useless. Win loss record is the only metric they really look at. The rating websites are much better.

Yes, I like Heaton too. In my opinion, things went downhill when Bud Shaw and Bill Livingston were hired on the PD side. I liked reading Pluto but my parents got the PD, not the ABJ, so I didn't see most of his work.

I agree on Livingston. Pretty much ignored him after awhile. Shaw I didn’t mind although I was probably influenced by watching him on the Les Levine TV show.
