MyBB Penny is an always Tiger, and he isn't a terrible basketball coach
He also isn't a very good college basketball coach. He has a long way to go and he has a long time to get there. If he doesn't become better than he is now or has shown in the past it won't be for lack of trying. I just hope he senses the need for his own improvement in order to improve the program. GTG

RE: Penny is an always Tiger, and he isn't a terrible basketball coach
After the way we finished last season I thought he may have turned a corner. It looks like he kept making right turns that brought us right back to the previous 4 years of mediocrity we saw from him. The last game's loss was 100% on coaching IMO. He looks lost or stoned on the sidelines at times. At this point I don't quite know what to make of him except that as you say, he will always be a Tiger, and one of my favorite players ever. I was all for the hire initially, now I'm not so sure.

Multiple factors that had nothing to do with coaching influenced the outcome. I'm not saying Penny is perfect and doesn't make mistakes, but to put it all on coaching is misguided.

Not calling a timeout when Davis was confused is coaching. Letting a team down 3 make a 3 is coaching. But I’m sure you will make some either lame or sarcastic response as usual

Not playing Kao AT ALL in the second half after he had a great 1st half and running Deandre ragged is 100% coaching. When we needed a rim protector the only legitimate one we have was riding the pine. And I'm not saying that we need to fire Penny but his learning on the fly days are over.

We needed someone to rebound too, and Kao had exactly zero rebounds against UCF. There are decisions that Penny made that in hindsight could have been different, but to say that it was only coaching is incorrect. When it mattered, the team was missing easy shots in the final minutes that would have won the game for us. We also had a no call on Davis just prior to the first overtime, when he was pushed out of bounds, that would have won the game for us. I realize that for some people, Penny is the easy target, but to blame it entirely on him is simply not reality.

You're right, in hindsight that no call on the shove of KD out of bounds was key. Until then it was our game. There were what appeared to be questionable coaching decisions in that game but in reality we were up and none of them caused the no call. That was key. Call that like any reasonable ref should and we win by 5.

Again, one more thing about Kao. I like him very much and see much future potential. Aside from great athleticism that game, he wasn't a game changing factor, and not playing him wasn't the reason we lost. Objectively, his performance compared to C. Lawson wasn't really dissimilar, and I can understand why Penny stuck with a known quantity versus taking a gamble with Kao.

Kao
-------------
1-2 FG
2-2 FT

4 PTS
0 REB
2 BLK
0 STL

C. Lawson
-------------
1-1 FG
0-0 FT

3 REB

I didn't listen to it. He explained why he limited Kao's minutes? I'll go try to find it now.

EDIT:

Okay, just as I suspected. We needed to have players who can rebound. Explains why Kao wasn't utilized more as that is one of his greatest weaknesses.

People don't have to start a new post every time they think something, especially when they think like you. Penny not being good enough for you. Irony at its finest.

The loss was us going 1-6, all of them easy shots, turning the ball over and going 4 minutes without a field goal with less than 6 minutes remaining, and the POS refs missing the body check on Davis, which would have given us a 5 point lead with 45 seconds left.

Nothing more, nothing less.

Multiple factors that had nothing to do with coaching influenced the outcome. I'm not saying Penny is perfect and doesn't make mistakes, but to put it all on coaching is misguided.

Lame? Tell me what was untrue in my post, cupcake.

I got your cupcake and you just like to argue. I doubt you even believe anything you say. You just like stirring the pot. You’re not fooling anyone
