You do stay off the Memphis site ... I stay off the Houston site ... So. Penny ain't perfect, but why do you think most players come to Memphis ... For the ribs ?!?! and it ain't the shoes ...
ive actually talked about this before... penny speaks to the ego...
penny tells players they are already good enough for the league, and memphis will get them used to the day to day on living like a pro.. playing for a former nba star, who has an other nba stars and former nba coaches on staff.. if i thought i was good enough id definitely love the idea of playing for memphis in my holdover year with NIL...the appeal is undeniable (also adding that penny "promises" positionless basketball, even though he doesnt hold to that like with minott)
developmental coaches tell you you are not good enough... tells players they are going to need multiple years of development ..
for example one of houston recruits sampson publicly says we dont intend to play him for a few years (which wont resonate with everyone)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySLedZr1A7s
samspon even speaks on this topic in the video above ...he said he told our recruits parent dont look at the team that put the most players in the nba, those were nba players coming in....sampson told them to look at teams known for taking developmental players and making them better, and how that resonated with them
also i rarely go overbioard, i think one of my strongest points is that i never make strong takes..youll never see me say "memphis is a bottom 3 team i dont like their roster", my takes are "memphis roster lacks shooters which is big question mark but still enough talent to finish 2nd"..and then a memphis fan will attack me for sayng memphis doesnt have shooters
similar to now, penny doesnt have a track record of development ...its not a strong hot take if you arent a memphis fan

Maybe it's Penny in those 4 year cases, but...
I say Lomax is limited by his stature, and he did improve his scoring, plus really improved his defense and rebounding. And he became an essential part of the starting lineup, even with Davis there now.
Dandridge is still around, but has always been limited by injuries.
Chandler Lawson is limited by his lack of athleticism. And has only played here 1 1/2 seasons.
Johnathan Lawson has only played half a season.
So really, there are no classic long term examples, as you defined them, to measure Penny by, even though you say there are 60 examples.
but the things you list as limited were also listed as limited for a ton of player...
interesting story, when houston first recruited jamal shaead, i didnt really want him because his comp was identical to alex lomax (which i didn't want)..literally similar level ratings, with word for word identical scouting reports (also becuase we were only bringing in 1 pg and lj cryer {now at baylor} was still on the table).then sampson developed him
and c.lawson has way more stock and upside that justin gorham (a 6'6 low major transfer big) who started on our final 4 team... or 3 star jwan roberts, a 6'7 pf who had zero offensive ability when he was recruited, who currently starts for us and a very good low post scorer now.. and though he hasnt shown it yet, we know the coaching staff has developed his shot ..gorham only had 2 years with houston, and jwan is on his junior year now ..
lol one of the BIGGEST debates in the houston forum was about gorham after his junior year (1st at houston).. who a big portion of our fanbase thought was trash, like pure trash (did 3pt per on 33% fgs is is terrible) ..even though sampson during his junior year said gorham would dominate as a senior
Quote:“When you are going to find how good Justin is, (will be) next year when he is a senior,” UH head coach Kelvin Sampson said after a practice during the 2019-20 campaign.
so there was a debate of "look at the film" vs "trust the coach"..... gorham was all conference as a senior, won most improved in the league
every player you named would have been a star on houston.. Every player you listed i genuinely believe would have "developed" into all-conference players at houston..then add nolley, harris, jeffries, boogie, baugh.. not even counting guys like Lance Thomas & Isaiah Maurice who both had drastically higher profiles than justin gorham
We disagree about both Lawsons...and most everything else on this topic...BUT...I will miss you when you're gone...sorta...
