RE: UAB Baseball update (including Young Memorial Field)
UAB baseball must win on Sunday at MTSU to have any hope for making the C-USA tournament. The two loses on Saturday were both hard fought games. The pitching was good in game one. The hitting was good in game two. The pitching in game two was very good until the wheels fell off in the bottom of eighth inning that included several costly errors. Sometimes I guess you just have bad luck. Maybe things will be better on Sunday. Just keep fighting guys.

I went to DII Eckerd College for undergrad in 1980-85. Our baseball team beat the snot out of DI teams on a regular basis. Eckerd's Steve Balboni held the NCAA home run record until a juiced-up cat named Mark McGuire attended USC.

RE: UAB Baseball update (including Young Memorial Field)
Does anyone know if baseball has a similar contingent to softball where people just hang out in the outfield? I'd really like to go to the games this weekend but also have a newborn that would probably be much more comfortable with his wagon setup outside rather than trying to make it work in the bleachers.

RE: UAB Baseball update (including Young Memorial Field)
I'm assuming we have the tie breaker with FIU due to us beating them 2 out of 3. FIU and Rice play this weekend and we play FAU. So we will have to win at least 2 out of 3 and have FIU beat Rice 2 out of 3 to move into 8th place and begin our magical postseason run. I honestly don't know how the tie breakers work in C-USA baseball, but Rice beat us all 3 times, so I'm guessing they have all the tiebreakers over us

Rice is hosting the conference tournament too. That would be odd if Rice was not in the field. I bet they might move tournament to LaTech if Rice does not make it.

Google maps is still showing the free concrete "bleachers" along University Blvd.

It has no shade at all, but there's a stretch of concrete along the third base line, just outside the fence. Setting up there with some folding chairs and the stroller should work just fine. Just be sure you have the sun shade attached to the stroller and bring some high SPF sun goo.

My college coach played in the 70s at David Lipscomb (now Lipscomb University), an NAIA school. He said they regularly stomped teams from what are now P5 conferences. Specifically, he said they would beat the hell out of SEC teams. They (big schools) just didn’t care about baseball back then.

Anyone know where things stand on the baseball facility upgrades - club house and stadium?

RE: UAB Baseball update (including Young Memorial Field)
Don’t want to derail the Blazer-related discussion (we do need to give him another year or 2…no one is using baseball to measure UAB’s success we just want it) but I’ve always wondered what triggered the big schools to fund baseball as massively as they do now. The World Series wasn’t televised until the mid-80’s so that may have been the catalyst. It would be interesting to see where the profitable/non-revenue line is as I suspect there are many G5 programs that turn a healthy profit from baseball. (This is not to mention the inherent inequality between states with HOPE schollys and northern programs/conferences. Many JCs and small schools outside the NCAA - NAIA, etc. - have their players raise money…players can even be “sponsored” like a race car.)

There is a mixed grass & concrete area along the third base line where people set-up with their own chairs etc. Just be sure to watch the game, last time I attended a senior citizen got hit by a foul ball sitting in that area.

It's frustrating to see our baseball team play games at Young Memorial Field. Especially with the upgrades already made to the softball, soccer and football practice facilities that you see while at the baseball games. I was not a regular fan this season due to many family duties and my work schedule. But I did attend a game in the last home series against FAU on Friday.. I left the game just thinking about our peogram and just don't understand playing at Young Memorial . The field was nice other than the visitor bullpen down the right field line. The men's bathroom sink was leaking big time and the entire bathroom was flooded.
I just don't understand why you play at YM when Regions Park is only several blocks away? Other schools share facilities with minor league clubs and it seems to work fairly well. I know Samford plays The Citadel at a minor league facility in Charleston that has also hosted SoCon Conference tournament games in years past. But something needs to be done right away.. It makes no sense to me fo play even one more season or any games at YM until upgrades are made.

Because the Barons said we can't.

Because the Barons said we can't. I HAVE MADE THIS SAME COMMENT ABOUT THE BARONS ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS OVER THE LAST 10 YEARS. EACH TIME SOMEONE RESPONDS STATING I AM WRONG.
I guess the Barons or UAB reneged on the 2013 agreement to play at Regions at some point during the last 10 years? I realize the stipulation for UAB was to play at Regions when the facility was available.

It’s a shame. We should be playing there as much as possible even after renovations. We also should bud for the AAC tourney at Regions. Who owns it again?

Yeah, stuff like that is why I’ve stopped caring about the Barons. One year they did college day on UAB’s summer graduation day. Another time on college day, they said they were playing UAB’s fight song, but played Blazer Victory instead (sign that they don’t know or care). Can’t remember the last time I went to a Barons game. I’ve switched my allegiance to the Trash Pandas.

Yea I stopped doing the barons as well a while back. Minor league ball is a tough watch anyway for me. I prefer the college game.
