Let's go after Cal
Penny is a great recruiter and NIT coach. Last night should have been the end to the Penny experiment.
Most of us have forgiven Cal. It was over a decade ago when he left.
Cal is on the hot seat at UK.
Lets bring him back.

03-puke If he couldn't make it at Ky. why in the L would we want him back at Memphis? You would probably want him to hire the sweat hog as assistant coach.
The tigers would certainly be the talk of the town then.

Not worked out at Kentucky? He is 375-107 at Kentucky
- 1 Sweet 16
- 3 Elite 8
- 2 Final Four
- 1 Championship loss
- 1 National Championship

Sign me up for that kind of not being able to make it...

And better. Pitino wins. He CAN coach!

People forget how similar Penny and Cal are. Great recruiters. Great marketers for the program. The knock on both is their ability to influence the game from the sidelines.

Edit: I'm not looking to run Penny out. I don't typically want a coach with baggage. Pitino's skills simply out-weigh his baggage. He coaches at the highest level. And his is issues include having an affair and operating the same as ever other NCAA coach - using shoe company to lure players. Other coaches have survived that "indictment."

One sideline difference, however, Cal only hires yes men as assistants. Penny does not appear to do that (Brown, Heath, Toppert, etc). Whether Penny listens to them or not, I don't know.

Agree. I'm in not saying they are identical. Cal and Penny simply have similar strengths and weaknesses.

Major difference (and it's a biggie): Penny has an agreeable personality whereas Cal has a disagreeable personality.

Yep. Penny is the hometown discount version. I have been impressed with penny this year. He has gotten out coached but he has also done a pretty good job in a lot of spots. I think last night he just panicked. KO should have played in the 2nd half, we took some terrible shots in big spots, etc.
we will be ok, penny will be ok. We got our hopes up and thought we might be something we aren’t. This team is a borderline tourny team and it has been since the first game. We can make the dance, we can miss the dance. Next year we have players coming in again.

It’s tempting…
We’ve only won 3 NCAA tournament games in the 13 years he’s been gone… ugh.

In the 15 year period between 2006 - 2020, counting 2020, when the season was cancelled and they were ranked #7 in the country, Cal went to the Sweet 16 or better every year in 13 of them.

1 - National Championship
5 - Final Four
6 - Elite 8
2 - Sweet 16
13 - NCAA Appearances

What did we have before Cal? I think 3 Final Fours, if you count the NIT in 1957, 1 Elite 8 and 4 Sweet 16's. BUT...Cal sucks. Some of our fans are psychos.

Having said that, as the years pile up from WWW not being the only game in town, and everyone being in on the best recruits, and many of them not playing college, time has caught up to Cal. He is clearly trending down.
