This team is definitely improving, maybe not as fast as most would like to see, but they are progressing both offensively and defensively.

Games like tonight have me believing that we shouldn't lose at Fifth Third for the rest of the season.

Didn't watch, will tonight. Definitely feels like this season will be a step forward. That's all we can really ask for. Just sucks that, barring a big upset next year, Wes is staring at 0-3 vs X to start his tenure. Other than that it's hard to complain with the trajectory the program seems to be on.

Games like tonight are why I look so forward to getting in the B12. You can't gauge whether we're getting better or just beating up on a sucka$$ team.

Next year we'll always know just where we're at.

Bolded, we need look no further than Wes Miller's three predecessors for head scratching losses to x. To me, it's become a somewhat meaningless non-conference tune-up; we can all recall a number of years x won and watched March Madness from home while UC participated. That game will be even less important beginning next season as a warmup before UC faces the best teams in the land in almost every conference game.

Last night was actually fun to watch and when UC gets a couple guys scorching it from outside the three point line they should handle most any team not named Houston in the American. Reed looked really comfortable shooting last night and Skillings continues to provide hope that alongside next year's recruits the rebuild could kick into high gear.

I guess it depends what you mean by "whether we're getting better". You can lose a lot of games in the Big 12 and be a damn good basketball team.

ECU isn't good. They're not terrible either. Getting a 28-point win is a good sign. The next 2 will tell us a lot more. Road games are hard, but these are games UC needs to win and the kind of games they lost last season.

The Xavier folks are arrogant, condescending, bags of dooosh, and their girls are ugly, but they do have a top tier basketball program. As a Bearcat fan it is hard to admit, but that tiny little nothin' school in Norwood with their 10K fans have spent a friggin' fortune in the last 25 years on facilities, coaches, and recruiting. As much as we hate to admit it, X is legit when it comes to basketball. That and I think it's in our heads now, something crazy is gonna' happen and X is gonna' find a way to beat us. Even when we have had more talent, we have always played that game not to lose. We need to set that right. I don't see a time when the Xavier game will be just another OOC tune up game.

It really is an insane run spanning 4 UC coaches and 6 Xavier coaches where Xavier wins every damn close game in the series.

Since Huggins was hired at UC there have been 33 games between UC and Xavier. 22 have been decided by 3 possessions or more. UC is 13-9 in those games. 11 have been 2 possessions or less. UC is 0-11 in those games. Different coaches, different players on both teams...often UC teams that were clutch in many other games and Xavier teams that floundered in other big games...doesn't matter...We've lost every close game for more than 3 decades against Xavier.

This team still has too many forehead slapping games like NKU, Temple and the first half against X.

I'd put the over/under of games this team wins in this year's big 12 at 2.5. They aren't there yet. 9 of the 10 teams in the Big 12 are top 32 kenpom right now. The 10th is 60. We are currently 73 kenpom. But we're improving and much better than last year, for what that is worth.

I have a pretty good idea where this team is. I don't need the big 12 to show me. This team is a borderline NIT team at the moment with an NCAA bubble team ceiling.

Don't think we have any shot at a bubble berth considering we have zero Q1 or Q2 wins as of today.

The only way we make the NCAAs is through the auto bid which we presumably have a better shot at this year than last year.

I'm talking about quality of the team, more so than whether they actually have a shot to make the tournament.

I hate to say it but I agreed with Mark Adams last night, ECU looked like a really talent poor team that has an identity built by their coach.I think they're around 160 in Kenpom and I feel like without a Jayden Gardener that's hard to do for them.

ECU is awful. Their record is what it is due to playing even more awful competition. Their schedule makes UC's look like murderer's row.

UC generally beats on bad teams. That's a good thing. Nothing last night should have come as a surprise to anyone including ECU fans.

RE: ECU @ UC Gamethread
Good bounce back game. This team isn't all that good, but they are actually fun to watch a lot of the time. The games are entertaining. The crowd was sparse, but it was ECU at 9:00 pm on a Wednesday. Even I questioned why I was going. But it was a good time.

I thought DeJulius had a chance at a triple double. He ended up with only 4 rebounds, so he didn't get close, but he got his 4th super early in the second half and just needed to hunt for some cheap ones. He's a good rebounder for a guy under 6 feet. He made a bunch of great passes and was getting guys really good looks. He can facilitate, and I'm glad we're getting the ball in his hands more instead of trying to make him into just a 2 guard. His shot selection is still rough, but he's been making enough of them. Great game by him, he's having a great senior year.

Nolley is feeling it from 3 of late. He could really be so much more than just a shooter though. He had 20, 10, and 3 assists, but it still somehow feels like he was holding back?

Davenport took more good shots and so he scored some points. Doesn't seem all that hard to figure out. He is hustling and looking to pass a bit more. Hope it continues.

Lakhin was quiet again, but he was giving great effort. MAW had another solid, steady game. Reed hit three 3s but his D is oof. Skillings had a few great little moves around the rim. Oguama is really struggling. I wish he'd focus on rebounding and putbacks instead of back-to-the-basket stuff. I guess he did have 8 rebounds in 19 minutes.

Wes got riled up a few times. He laid into Skillings like I've never seen him do with anyone.

ECU is bad and their uniforms look like knockoffs. Fun game, good to get the win.

DDJ is really stepping into the play making role. i've seen the Bearcats only a handful of times but there were games where DDJ has really gotten into it on the defensive end as well. i am worried that he's expending a ton of energy so hopefully he'll get more time to rest but love the role he's assuming for the team

Definitely looked like he was coasting last night. Like he knew he was the best player on the court so he was content to let others get theirs. i missed the houston game so i don't know how he played but i want to see him step up against the higher caliber comp. i also feel that he goes as his 3 pt game goes. if his shot ain't working, neither is he. Hopefully he's able to figure out how to make plays and get buckets outside of the 3 pt game.

if he could just stop launching those threes where he is jumping sideways. Honestly, if he could work a pick and pop that allows him to step into his three, i would be content to let him shoot that. it just looks so much better when he steps into a three versus trying to take one on the move.

i wish players with limited offensive ceilings understood that there's no shame in being ben wallace. Just clean the glass, be a nasty post defender, and set screens and you can actually get some run in the nba. He has athleticism but he fouls way too much and misses way too many shots. And he needs to try and tear down the rim every time. The guy has almost no touch around the rim.
