Credit the guys on the floor at the end of the game. Great stop. Kent State was tougher than a tough Bobcat team. I bet the Flashes see them 3 times.

Congratulations to Kent State! Tough, physical game from both teams. A real, rock-em, sock-em type of game. Man, your team sure plays great defense! Scary great!

Nice win, second straight game where we made too many mistakes late but again it felt like we had them gassed by the end.
One play I want to comment on is the double technical. I thought that was absolutely BS. The OU player was trying to step over Gillespie and his foot was directly in Gillespie's groin. It wasn't a kick but more of pushing his foot into his groin while trying to step over him. Did the refs not see it? No they absolutely did because one of the refs grabbed his foot and trying to pull it back when the shoving started. What Sullinger did, running in to try to get him off his guy was absolutely the right thing to do. Also, Sullinger didn't get his arms extended but immediately the OU player gave him a two handed shove. The OU player caused it, instigated it, then escalated it. Giving double techs is a cheap cop out.
One other thing I'll say. I think it was a mistake to drop Odisupe and Gillespie from the rotation so soon. The post is clearly our weak spot and our best player (Hornbeak) is foul prone. I think we always knew we were going to need the depth for the likes of Wilson, Sparks, and Freeman. So I would've liked to see us work these guys in more. But hey, we survived despite Wilson's big game and Odisupe looked ok defensively for having played so little.

If Hornbeack could quickly develop into any kind of consistent inside presence offensively/defensively Kent could be scary good, especially if Carry gets back on his game.

Those guys figured it out and did the job against Wilson. They made him earn it.

Agree on all points. Sully did not deserve a technical on that play. He merely came to the crime scene and then got shoved. I’m thinking that the refs saw the game was getting “chippy” and maybe thought giving both teams a T might put a stop to it.

Agree that Carry is in some kind of funk, not unlike Jacobs a couple of games ago.
The team depth contributed significantly to the win.
Thomas has taken it upon himself to address the rebounding issue. He may not get the rebound, but is causing havoc.
Need more consistency from the center/post position. Agree, would like to see Gillespie & Odusipe get more time in the rotation.
Jury is still out on Payton. Good team player, but his inconsistency is frustrating.
Congratulations on the win. Tough venue to play.

If Hornbeak or Odisuppie or even Payton(?) were a consistent 20-minute player Gilliespie would be a freshman post redshirt, which almost all freshmen mid-major post players should be. I think he'll be the most complete of all of them. He's just 10-15 pounds and a year worth of experience away.

So I gotta say, Miryne Thomas is not the player I thought we were getting. 5th year player I really thought we knew exactly what we were getting in him, but it doesn't seem to be the case... And I mean that in a good way. I expected him to be a bigger more athletic Beck with better outside shooting, but he's becoming a big factor on the glass and defensively. From how it seems he's getting better defensively as the season has gone on, my opinion is that he's someone who is very coachable and has completely bought into our system. What's happening is we're going from a defense built on two great defensive guards and now we have a 6'8" 3/4 flying around causing havoc behind them.
Here are some stats to support what we're seeing. He's currently averaging 1.5 steals per game. If you sum up his steals per game over his 3 seasons at BSU it comes to 1.4. He's 10 steals away from having more steals in 1 year at Kent than his 3 years at BSU. He's 3rd on our team (a great defensive team) in defensive win shares and defensive box score +/-. Last year, on a very bad defensive BSU team, he was 3rd in DWS and 7th in DBPM. His evolution into a defensive presence is a big part of where we're at.

He has said the biggest difference between BSU and Kent is at Kent you play D or you dont play. He has bought in and is making a difference we need inside.
Our bigs are young, with the exception of Payton, his inconsistency is what is holding him back from getting more minutes. Other 3 have limited offensive games and not sure we really need them on that end other then for O rebounding and put backs. Only so many touches per possession and with the Big 3 dominating shots, it is hard to get everyone involved.

Great analysis! Thomas has surprised me with his D and rebounding. He is one long quick dude who loves to ball hawk in those passing lanes. These past few games he’s been fantastic. Love his attitude too!

Nice performance. I was surprised to hear this is the first time since 2004-2005 we started 4-0 in the MAC!

Modern day hoops I know. But wish sincere and malique would continue to get to the rim vs chuck 3’s. Sincere isn’t a pure shooter but his mid range is nice and when he attacks he either gets a layup or someone else a layup as he’s a great passer.
Malique is so strong. Like chris singletry strong and good finisher and will find the open guy as well.
Let’s leave the bulk of 3’s to gio, sully and miryne.
Great to nitpick at 4-0
