On this day in 1953....
On that date, Notre Dame (who two years earlier had surrendered its national TV network deal due to NCAA extortion) petitioned the NCAA for unlimited television broadcasting of collegiate football games.


However, NCAA policymakers vote 172-13 in favor of only airing one game each Saturday afternoon.

(An example of the "good ole' days of complete NCAA control over athletics while we lament the "Wild West" of current times)

Some folks consider the 1950s/1960s as the beginning of "modern college athletics." However, I consider the 1970s/1980s as the time when modern college athletics truly were born — as that was the era that both full racial integration of higher ed/sports and comprehensive TV coverage unfolded.
