What would FCS do if the season start moves to Week 0?
The thought just came across my mind and thought I would toss it out for group discussion. While I'm not an FCS expert, I can see 5 potential options.
A. Regular Season expands to 12 games to match FBS
B. With some conferences growing to 12+ members in FCS, allow conferences to hold conference championship games between the regular season and playoffs.
C. Hybrid of A & B using the conference champions week format to hold conference championship games for their top 2 teams while allowing the rest of their league to play a 12th game. (Smaller leagues could stick with Option A)
D. Playoff Expansion - Transformation Committee recommendations 25% of teams in each sport's playoffs, which is 32 teams in FCS. FCS could add another round of playoffs to give basically the FCS Top 25 + all unranked conference champs a playoff spot, maybe each conference champ gets at least a bye, and the top 8 overall a double bye.
E. Just add a 2nd Bye Week and stick with the current regular season format (this seems to be the most likely option for FBS with their 12 game season). Ivy League may use this option to go up to 11 games with no byes or add a bye week to their 10 game season.

I think E is the most likely option with A being a possibility for a chance for a extra buy game.

The FCS is not going to expand to 30+ teams as the sport has under 200 participating schools; there's just no reason to expand the playoffs unless the NCAA is able to get more $$$, exposure for FCS as they pull some sports away from others in the next round of media rights.
The Week 0 thing is a legit concern; CUSA announced a schedule this week with more week 0 games than I would have ever imagined. Even if the games are on CBS College Sports, that's even more games coming into the window.
The 12 game idea is not a good one as school(s) struggle to schedule in the traditional 11-game years. If the FBS schools are playing less guarantee games as schedules change in the P5 with the conference realignment, TV monies change - that does not help the FCS schools in covering the expanded costs of an annual 12th game or their ability to get to 12 games.

FCS already starts in Week 0 with the FCS Kickoff in Montgomery. This past season Jax State played SFA. Austin Peay also played WKU that weekend.
Rumor has it that North Alabama and Mercer will face off in the game this year. No announcement yet.

There are years FCS plays a 12 game regular season. I think the next year it can happen is 2024.
