Nice trade-out for the Sun Belt
I thought the Sun Belt moves were motivated by football, but they sure have improved their basketball. They kicked out LR and UTA whose NET rankings are 339 and 297, respectively. Meanwhile, they added USM (65), Marshall (78), JMU (85), and ODU (139). The first 3 have the best NET rankings in the Sun Belt. The Sun Belt is ranking as the 14th best conference according to the NET and 13th according to the RPI.

The OVC is the 29th ranked conference according to the NET. That's why I honestly believed we would fare well in the OVC this year. The vast majority of our players were recruited to play in the Sun Belt, so you would think they would be better than OVC players. So far it doesn't appear to be the case, at least, on the men's side.

Not sure the problem is with the players or their level of talent! A team with lesser talent can prevail if they are coached better than the team with greater talent. That seems to be what is happening.

Obviously, you and others on this board are convinced Walker can't coach. My Ph.D. is not in basketball and thus I don't have the skills to assess whether a coach is "good" or "bad". All I can go on is wins and losses. Using that criteria I can say Coach Beard is a good (actually great) coach. Sidney, while a great player and nice guy, is a bad coach. Based on his record here, I believed Mike Newell was a great coach- but he never did much of anything, after he left here, so I really don't have an opinion one way or another. I know folks who don't believe Nolan Richardson was that great of a coach- I look at his record and say he was. With regard to Darrell, he won 2 DII conference championships and then won a league title in his second year here. So, he won 3 championships in his first 4 years of college coaching. Pretty hard to argue he is not a good coach based on that data. We have been bad the last 2 years. The first of those was the "Covid" season and I wouldn't hold that year against any coach. Last year's team was hit with more injuries than I have ever seen. I just don't see how you can blame a coach when so many players miss all or part of the season. This season we have been mostly healthy. It is his fifth season. I agree with others on here that there should be no more excuses. Things are not looking very good right now, but there are still a lot of conference games to play. If we don't show significant improvement, while I doubt I'll be calling for the coach's head, I certainly will have no problem with those who do.

I don’t know if he can’t coach. I just don’t think he even cares to try at this point. He’s garbage.
