MyBB Kent State vs. Toledo
The Sunday coffee always sips a bit nicer after a Golden Flash victory. As sports fans across America prepare for a wild day of football, I can't help but spend some time on Tuesday's clash at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center.

Toledo is 10-5 and 1-1 in the MAC. After opening MAC play with a home loss to Ball State, the Rockets rebounded with a 28 point win over Western Michigan. Four players scored in double figures in that win. The big three of Shumate (23 points), Milner (16 points) and Dennis (10 points) were joined by Tyler Cochran who scored 20 off the bench. Two other Rockets scored 9 points against the vaunted Bronco defense. Cochran, a true son of Toledo, is now playing for his third MAC school. He has stops at NIU and Ball State.

Keep this in mind about the disparity between Toledo's final score against WMU (102-74) and Kent State's (80-72)...Toledo shot 53% from three point land against the Broncos while Kent shot 31% from the field. I love to compare scores as much as the next guy, but I'm pretty sure anybody can win in this conference shooting over 50% from three. But how many teams can win shooting 31% from the field?

Anyway, Kent State is going to have to play defense against UT. Plain and simple. The Rockets average 86 points per game and rebound the ball well. Can Kent State win a shootout? Perhaps. Is that the recipe for a victory on Tuesday? Likely not. Grinding 'em up and taking care of the basketball is the recipe I'd follow.

Kent State 72
Toledo 71
Carry comes up big when the Flashes need it most!

I couldn't agree more. The Flashes' success the remainder of the year is going to be determined by their defensive play more than any other factor. Of course, that is the norm for the MAC and has been for quite some time. Teams in the past that tried to win with more of an offensive mentality than a defensive one have typically underperformed. It has become a cliche, of course, but defense travels well to other venues better than does offense. And there is no excuse for an "off night" defensively. Obviously, if the opponent shoots the lights out despite playing defense well, that's just the breaks. It happens.

The 2001,2002 Marshall teams come to mind.

Excellent example. I also recall after Kent State beat them for the third time in 2002, Marshall's center whose name I can't recall said he still thought they had a better team than Kent State.

I read that article. I don't like the chatter around this team. At all. We aren't good enough to not walk into every single game like a hungry dog. Obviously, I don't think we are going undefeated in MAC play, but I feel like right now this team is vulnerable. I hope I am wrong and we come out and drill Toledo on Tuesday and show everyone that we mean business.

This is a big test for us. Toledo has that guard from Garfield that ran us up the wall in 2019. We are probably lucky it is on a Tuesday or Toledo would travel well. They probably still will. I hope we get a lot of local students to come out. I saw a coupon code for $10 GA tickets.

RE: Kent State vs. Toledo
Toledo has that Jackwagon of a head coach Coach K. Used to be at Wisconsin Green Bay and they upset us at the MAC Center and said Jackwagon started pointing and screaming obsenities at the chair back seats for god knows why other than he's an arrogant prick. Said game had a terrible missed call by our old buddy (turned high end ref, high end computer hacker, now retired ref) Bo Boroski. Ball was rolling out of bounds by 5 feet almost hitting visitors chairs but he missed it.

Jackwagon has had moderate success at UT, but no NCAA bids and i'd guess because of his personality no offers to move up the coaching ladder. Kent by 25 PLEASE!!

His teams are soft as Charmin TP, hit them out of the gate and we should be fine.

There are many theories on what Hell may really be like. I personally like to believe it is a room with no door and a tv that just plays games officiated by Bo Boroski non stop.

RE: Kent State vs. Toledo
Interesting. They only shot 38.6% from the floor, which is lousy, but they still made three more FGs than Toledo because they got a whopping 20 offensive rebounds, 6 steals, and only 6 turnovers all of which resulted in a whopping 70 FG attempts. Thomas had an awesome game.

Meanwhile, the Zips seem to be coming along. A road win tonight, which has, so far, not been that common in MAC games.

RE: Kent State vs. Toledo
That was a fun game to watch. Good hard fought basketball all night and the refs did a good job if letting them play (especially in the first half). Carry, Jacobs, and Thomas all played great. The rebounding in the second half was the best I think I've seen from us all year. And I loved the contributions from Hornbeak vs their small lineup. Tough matchup for him defensively spending a lot of time out on the perimeter with Jacobs on Shumate but forgetting a couple possessions they weren't really able to exploit him on defense. Which allowed him to stay on the court and cause problems on the offensive glass.

Lastly, Jacobs may need to hire a tax professional next year. I imagine his local taxes are going to get confusing when he has to report that he had established a residence in Shumate's head for 40 minutes.

Three games in and we're already the only remaining undefeated MAC team.
