The other reason why the Broncos are pivoting toward Harbaugh

I don't think Harbaugh can come back and be a successful coach at the NFL level. He was completely out coached in the CFP. It wasn't a talent mismatch. He is a motivator and a leader, but ultimately, you need a genius staff around him to be successful. Then again, I'm not sure about the potential marriage with Peyton and Wilson either. Just not a good job for anyone.

Harbaugh in Carolina, or Harbaugh with complete control in Indy, could be the answer. A total rebuild project suits him.

Also this morning from CBS Sports:

Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper did indeed have a phone conversation recently with Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh. But the Panthers owner didn't initiate the call.

Sources tell CBS Sports that Harbaugh -- or his representation -- had been calling Tepper with some regularity in recent weeks
. Tepper eventually held a conversation with Harbaugh, but it was never characterized as a job interview for the permanent head coaching job in Carolina.

Since he's had major success in both places, IMO Harbaugh is in the enviable position of being able to command top or close to top dollar at Michigan and the NFL

It's just a question of what he wants, and I do not know what he wants.

I wouldn't want to coach in college football or basketball right now in its current state. Money flying all over the place to players and text messages are what we are worried about. It's the Wild West right now and those idiots at the NCAA have no control over any of it.

I don't blame Big Jim one bit, get the hell out of this dumpster fire!

I agree. Jim Harbaugh has taken an NFL team to the Super Bowl and Michigan to the CFP twice. The only current coach with that type of success at both the pro and college levels is Pete Carroll. Harbaugh can name his price.

Obviously, money talks, but I think Harbaugh is ultimately going to want/need a Bill Belichick-level of control over a pro roster (effectively a GM/coach combo). It needs to be a clear step up in power beyond coaching duties and money. If it were a matter of simply hiring Harbaugh as a coach and that’s it, then every NFL team with a job opening would be falling all over themselves to get him. My guess is that Harbaugh wants more than that, though, which is why I wouldn’t read into it too much that he’s the one calling some teams like the Panthers as opposed to the other way around. NFL teams are likely aware that Harbaugh likely won’t move just to be a plug-and-play coach and still reporting to a traditional General Manager, which limits the number of places that he’d realistically consider. It has to be the right fit here.

The money is better in the NFL, but money should not be the deciding factor. Harbaugh would have the power he needs at Denver. The question is, can he win in Denver? Can he fix Russell Wilson? Denver is last in scoring in the NFL at 16.0 points per game. The Broncos are finishing up their six consecutive losing season today. Their first and second round draft picks in the 2023 NFL were traded to Seattle for Wilson. They have to clear salary cap space to acquire badly needed free agents. They are in the same division with Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert. Those are the questions and issues that Harbaugh needs to answer.
