RE: Facilities thread CUSA 4.0
They are still in the fundraising mode right now in Huntsville. They are doing a few tweaks to Bowers for this fall. But they need significant upgrades across the board in all sports. Most of their construction pre-CUSA announcement was focused on academic building including the new medical school in Conroe. They are now being forced to pick up the pace quickly.

By the way, this is what Williams Stadium looked like this past fall after we did some upgrades:

Huntsville, Texas. Home of Sam Houston State University. Final resting place of the French explorer LaSalle. Home of the nation's largest penitentiary complexes. And seven month from now it will host a member school of Conference USA.

I am a Liberty alum who lives near Huntsville and many of my neighbors are Sam profs and athletic officials. Sorry for the confusion.

Not claiming that I’ve done a personal inspection tour or anything like that. But my honest hunch would be that Liberty’s overall facilities are second only to BYU among non-P5 programs.

I wasn't familiar with BYUs facilities so I had to look them up. BYU was certainly ready for the move up to the big 12 already but I would give the nod to Liberty for nicer facilities but im obviously biased. Several of BYUs facilities are serviceable but are on the older side leaving them in need of a renovation. Meanwhile there isn't an athletic building at Liberty that hasn't been completely renovated or built in the last 10ish years. Where BYU has a huge advantage is the size of their football stadium and basketball arena. Libertys football stadium is very nice but only seats 25k compared to BYUs 63k. Same with basketball, Liberty arena seats 4k to BYUs 19k. I haven't looked up other G5 schools facilities so I'm not sure if there is another one like SMU with better facilities. I'm sure there are in individual sports at least.

Oh, that multipurpose indoor practice facility that I mentioned earlier in the thread opened up today.

Once again, this is just for baseball, softball and the non-revenue sports. Football and Track & Field have their own indoor facilities.

We're a private school as you well know. So we rarely reveal dollar figures. But it is 75k sq ft per the news release when they announced the project.

Honestly we really don't have any big projects left to pursue. Hopefully we start investing more in research facilities on the academic side. That's ticked up a bit since Junior was kicked out. But we have lots of room for improvement.

SHSU has plans in the pipe. Thanks to SlyFox for popping in to say something. He regularly visits our KatFans board where most of our fans are at. Bowers is going to get some major overhauls over the next few years. The corner berms are all going to turn into pavilion areas for fans to hangout with bar tops and around an extra 500 seats for capacity on each side. The turf is also being replaced this summer which has been in dire need of replacement the last couple of seasons. The school is also taking our field events out of the stadium leaving only the track.

SlyFox is correct that the university has focused on expansion of the school itself over athletics. We did recently build an incredibly expensive medical school North of Houston in the Conroe/ Woodlands area. I believe the focus will start to shift away from academic expansion (although it will still be hot and heavy) with multiple dormitories being knocked down to be replaced with much larger dorms. Sam Houston's enrollment is around 21,000 and growing quickly. Every class seems to be breaking enrollment records every year.

Once the pavilions and turf are completed, the track will be covered until enough money is raised and a location is decided on for where to relocate the track and the soccer stadium. Expect in Fall 2024 to see a brand new pressbox/ additional suites on the West side of Bowers. The suites added will be for the donors that are on a 20-year waitlist for some premium seating within the stadium as well as an added concourse area with some cantilevered club seating (upper deck type look). Ribbon boards are planned to be added in the stadium on both the home and away side for fans. Once this phase of construction is completed there is no planned dates for future expansion, but the plan is to get a larger video board, bowl in the South endzone to create a tunnel to run out of for the team, the visitors side pressbox and concession renovations with a possibility to add more suites as needed, Then lastly would be to finish bowling in the stadium on the Northside (the Video Board will likely be designed to accommodate seating in the North endzone).

Other renovations include some possible stuff with softball, a new Tennis facility and the addition of a sand volleyball court.

The baseball stadium is already up to C USA standards and is quite a nice facility for fans to visit. The only thing they're likely to get is new turf with the updated athletic markings and conference logos on the field.

Johnson coliseum just had upgrades done to it and has a good fan atmosphere but I believe there are some plans to designate a student section and to add some more premium floor courtside seating at some point.

Football is the main focus currently for Sam Houston athletics as the stadium has not been updated other than the addition of some chairbacks 20 years ago. The fieldhouse was just updated which is the one highlight and I've personally toured it and it feels like a P5 level facility that they did a very good job with. If there are any other trolls that want to make fun of our facilities I'll be glad to answer your questions. It's no secret we're behind in the facilities game but that is just the product of not being a flagship school (no school in TSUS is designated as the flagship) in the state of Texas where Texas and Texas A&M get all of the love from our state government. We are working on it and will get there but that has not prevented us from being the 2nd best FCS football team (behind NDSU) in the entire country since 2010. We'll be ready to play with or without facilities.

I'm pulling for Sam, JaxSt and Kennesaw all to leap forward with their facilities. This is an informative thread to know what member schools have in the pipe line with facilities upgrades.

And Sly, a LU fan, is providing good insight on Sam.

Does Kennesaw St. have football stadium expansion plans? If so will an expansion be completed by the 2024 season?

They do, it is in their master plans but renderings are not out. Doubt they will be done in time for 2024.

We won't be here for 4.0, but UNT did release the new designs for our athletic center expansion. 20,000+ square foot strength and conditioning center and new 15,000 square foot locker room for football. Lots of nice things.

You'll need that and more to compete with the Highland Park guys for DFW talent. But that looks great!

Thanks. We are holding our own on with facilities. When we announced we were building an IPF, SMU announced they were building one too. Both are nice, but ours is bigger.

RE: Facilities thread CUSA 4.0
Football stadium upgrades underway

Quote:After winning a Christmas season bowl game, the gift keeps on giving to NMSU’s football program as the team is receiving nearly $16 million in upgrades to its main facilities.

The upgrades to Aggie Memorial Stadium come at a time when the university is preparing to enter Conference USA later this year. Upgrades to the stadium’s turf and locker room are in the works according to Gary Martinez, who is a project manager with the university’s facilities and services project development and engineering department.

The current locker room, built in 1978, has seen its fair share of tribulations according to Martinez. He said that the locker room overall is “outdated” and prone to water leaks. The new building will address these issues and then some.

“Having a new building is always great,” Martinez said. “With this new building, we’ll be able to incorporate the latest and greatest technology to be able to recruit athletes, to be able to come in when they’re injured and be comfortable and just giving them that space that is theirs.”

The new locker room will be built as a two-story complex, which will house the Aggies’ locker space on the ground floor, allowing for easier entrances to the field on game days. The new complex will be built adjacent to the Aggie Hall of Legends building. The current locker room will be for visiting teams.

In addition to a brand new locker space for the 2022 Quick Lane Bowl champions, the facility will also house a nutritional center, health offices, hydrotherapy and mental health services for all NMSU athletes to access.

“Everybody is real excited,” Martinez said. “I’ve heard nothing but great news. Everybody is really excited to see the final product.”

According to Martinez, the project is still in its design stages. Construction is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2023, and expected to be completed by August 2024. The project is expected to cost $15 million and is being paid for by funds that were appropriated by the New Mexico legislature in 2022, according to Martinez.

NMSU football players and staff will continue using the current locker facilities without major interruptions during the fall 2023 season. In addition to the new locker room facilities set to open next year, the team will play on brand new turf this year when the 2023 season officially kicks off this August.

Approximately $1.7 million was initially requested to replace the turf that was installed nine years ago, according to NMSU’s 2022 capital outlay request sheet, but ended up costing about $769,000. The new turf is being paid for by a severance tax bond.

Project manager John Padilla, who oversees the turf renovation efforts, said the previous turf was not only reaching the end of its useful life, but that it was also prone to flooding in the outer arena area.

The new turf is expected to help NMSU athletics recruitment efforts, and better protect athletes while playing their sports.

“It would provide better playing field performance and lessen the possibility of injuries to players,” Padilla said.

Remaining field markings such as logos and yard lines are currently being installed. The April 20 spring game will mark the football team’s first use of the new turf before the official fall 2023 season begins on Aug. 26 against the University of Massachusetts.

I flew into Denton for lunch this past week and received a tour of UNT's facilities and came away very impressed. You and SMU will lead the new AAC in facilities. Of course, SMU does not offer Baseball or Softabll so that gives UNT the lead. ;-)

UNT needs to add baseball. New AAC will have no representation in the metroplex for baseball. That is just so wrong with the talent in the metroplex and Texas in general.
