Some countries, like Germany, still had pandemic restrictions in place. ... The Fighting Hawks also outdrew two NHL teams — the Buffalo Sabres and Ottawa Senators.

Favorite arena story: Andy Murray (then coach of LA Kings) dropped his son Brady off to play at UND and toured the arena. His plan was to create a list of things not there that Brady would need. He left with a list of things the LA Kings facilities didn't have. 03-lmfao

Doesn't everyone have a humidor room for their hockey sticks to maintain proper flex? It's just down the corridor from the high-altitude training room.
Have you seen the high-altitude training facilities at DU and CC?

DU and CC don't have true high altitude training. I used to take part in high altitude training for Ironman. True high altitude training does not begin until you hit 7,000'. The only schools in the country with true high altitude training centers, NAU (Arizona), UW (Wyoming), Western State (Colorado).

I don't really feel the altitude in normal activities in Amarillo (3700 ft.) or Ft. Davis (4800 ft.) or Denver (5200 ft.). But I do feel it in Santa Fe (7000 ft.) and especially when I am running.

Have any of the Southern teams that have left for FBS except for Appalachian State really been "powerhouses"?
Yeah, quite a few were. Georgia Southern is easily the most decorated FCS program not named North Dakota State. 6 championships, 10 SoCon titles, they were the blueblood for decades. Marshall was a powerhouse. Western Kentucky was before they moved up.

Sam Houston has the second most FCS playoff wins since 2010. JMU had a decent run of success from 2016-2021 as well. Those are the only two programs that have won titles other than NDSU in the past 11 years (South Dakota State gets an opportunity to become the third in a few days) and now they’re gone. Jacksonville State came close to a title in 2015.

Sure, the SoCon dropoff once the “Deeper Than Hate” duo left, as well as Richmond and EKU’s fall from relevance has hurt csubdivision ball in the south. But at least 3-6 “powerhouse” programs have left the FCS not including App State and that really waters things down.

Eff irrelevant Richmond. Eff em.

When Marshall, Appalachian State and Georgia Southern were all in the SoCon together, that was literally the toughest 1-AA conference in the country.

Even this random middle of nowhere school fan thinks USF has the capacity and resources to be the best of the P6.
That tells you something about their national image.

I'm not sure what you mean because it sounds like you are referring to high altitude training that is naturally occurring? Other than the obvious reasons, how does that differ from a high altitude training room? This is the one at UND, for reference https://youtu.be/Yd7dKJGGzb8?t=212
I figured they would have giant pictures of Pikes Peak and Mount Evans, or at least VR glasses, then tilting ice surfaces so it feels like you are skating uphill. I wonder what kind of air locks they have.

No doubt. Even after Marshall left it was a great conference. App State and Georgia Southern leaving was the real nail in the coffin. Losing those schools, their histories and fan support hurt the whole FCS. And now the SoCon is second rate.

Marshall is in West Virginia, not a Southern school IMO... finally App State and Georgia Southern didn't start playing in the FBS until 2014, NDSU had just won 3 championships in a row while they were still FCS. 04-cheers

Considering that WV was formed by Unionists during the Civil War and actually seceded from Virginia and the Confederacy, I agree that we can safely say that they are decidedly NOT Southern.

There is a TON more to that particular story than is commonly taught or known today. I won't drag the board down with the details, but it's far from that cut and dry. :-)

Right. Kentucky is clearly a southern state but was unionist. Only 3 states sent more troops to the Confederacy, but only 5 sent more to the union armies. In 1860 they didn't vote for native sons John Breckinridge or Abraham Lincoln, but voted for John Bell of the Constitutional Union Party.

You can also add that Marshall is almost perfectly due east of Lexington KY (2 hours away on I64). I think when some people mention WV they think we're all close to the DC area, but we're not. We're closer to Lexington than we are to Morgantown.

And Morgantown is 3 hours from the part of the state close to DC and requires driving through Maryland to get to that section.

With North Dakota State once again set to play in the FCS Championship, questions continue on the future conference home for the Bison. Here’s what NDSU AD Larsen tells The Athletic: “A lot of things have changed in the last 10 years. You’d be crazy if you weren’t looking internally about what’s best for you. [...] Outside of the highest levels of FBS where geography doesn’t matter anymore, it still does for most conferences. We have a great brand, but with certain geography, I would venture to say if we were in a different part of the country, we would have received an invite by now.” As for Bison FB HC Entz: “Just in terms of football, I think our best fit is the American. From a geographical standpoint, there are (four) in Texas, plus Tulsa. Those are in the Central time zone and (others are) in the East, so it would fit for our fans and TV. From a travel standpoint, flying to Dallas is just as fast as Youngstown or Macomb, Illinois.”

https://theathletic.com/4058193/2023/01/...-fbs-move/

I can't see the AAC taking a team straight from FCS, especially a team not in a major metro area. They're going to want NDSU to prove themselves as a viable FBS brand first.

Personally, I do not see any path to FBS for NDSU that does not include CUSA or the MAC. Good on them if they can prove me wrong.

Why not? They lost their golden tickets of UCF and Cincinnati that went to the NY6 bowl. Tulane is one off as they are a YO-Yo in football. Memphis putter recently, USF is horrible, Navy's ship just sunk, SMU could not get over the hump. None of the new 6 members coming in made the NY6 yet. NDSU might be the one winning all the games, and going to the NY 6 bowls.

With almost the sole exception of UAB, pretty much every "upgrade" from FCS initially passes through a bottom feeder conference.

Even Boise State was initially in the Big West, which was considered the worst FBS conference in the pre-Sun Belt days. And even after they got an upgrade to the WAC, it took them a whole decade to get a further upgrade to the MWC.

UAB and USF and that was because they were already established C-USA members.

Yeah, Marshall is closer to UK and VaTech.
