Before the Pac-12 and Big 12 engaged in a public feud regarding the most recent round of college football expansion — and whether it might include one conference poaching teams from the other — Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff was intrigued by the possibility of partnering with the Big 12, according to an email obtained via public records request by The Athletic.

It makes sense. A super league, or even a true scheduling agreement might have been better for all the remaining teams than going it alone.

And would have put the ACC firmly in last place.

A total merger of the 2 Conferences would be the ideal scenario for almost all concerned, but uncertainty about a few schools and their potential mutual interest in the B1G will likely delay this a while. Think about it:

The big 12 schools benefit by locking in a good #3 or 3a status now, and a strong #3 status after the ACC raid is completed.
The Pac schools benefit by ensuring that they're not left out in favor of ACC refugees once all of that sorts out.

Instead what we will get is a kind of 4 and 4a status for the big 12 and Pac until 2030 or so, then more uncertainty, probably a continuation of 4 and 4a status until 2036, then...who knows? Uncertainty for everyone. The big 12 seems best-aligned for #3 status long term, at least for now, but that could change by 2036. They'd be wise to push for a Pac merger again.

The problem is there are still a lot of valuable G5 and some FCS schools that could be in a power conference as they are being undervalue by the networks. You have P5 schools that are overvalue as well.
