Schools Seeking First Tournament Ever

There were 39 current DI schools who had never qualified for the NCAA Tournament. Only one of them, Kennesaw State qualified for the tournament. St. Francis Brooklyn announced that they have dropped their athletics program, including a basketball program that had failed to qualify in 69 attempts. The 37 remaining schools will be joined next season by Merrimack which completes its transition to Division I on July 1.

There were 81 current DI schools who have played in the NCAAT (since 1985) yet have never won a tournament game. 10 have qualified for the 2023 tournament, where they were joined by Kennesaw State. Hartford which had played in the NCAAT but never won a game is moving to DIII and will be removed from this category. If they ever return to DI they will be added back in.

A&M-Corpus Christi won their play-in game and will attempt to win their first-round game. Florida Atlantic win their first tournament game with the win over Memphis.

Schools Seeking First Tournament in Modern Era (1985+)

There were 11 schools that had played in the NCAAT before 1985 when the NCAA tournament expanded to 64 teams, but had not been back since.

One of them, Furman qualified for its first tournament since 1980. The Paladins last win in the tournament occurred in 1974 when they won a first round game to advance to the Sweet 16 (the tournament had 25 teams).

There are now 10 schools seeking their first tournament in the modern era.
