RE: 2022-23 WAC MBB Week #8
I'm looking for the NMSU/SUU match to be a high scoring affair. SUU likes to play fast and NMSU's defense is erratic at best.

And, right off the bat, the two hottest teams (Sam Houston and Utah Valley) meet in Orem, UT... That's should set the tone for the conference race.

If they are letting in 10 teams all three of us could be out.

However, it is important to prioritize. Being out of the tournament is acceptable if we beat NMSU.

We beat NMSU early in WAC play in 2012/13. They beat us in return at their place and again in the Conference tournament final.

I left out the losses to UMKC, Chicago State, and Cal State Bakersfield since they are no longer in the WAC. However, in total, NMSU has lost 70 conference games to its peers over 17 years and that includes post season games. It might seem like a lot, but keep in mind, NMSU has also won 234 conference games over that same span.

I think a little over 4 losses per year in conference for a 17 year average is fine. Probably near the best average of any team in the country during the same time period. The WAC was not exactly stacked during many of the years.

42 of the 70 conference loses happened before 2013. Yet, NMSU still managed to win three WAC Tournament Championships in seven years. Since 2013, only 28 loses and Seven WAC Tournament Championships. Could have been eight Championships if the 2020 WAC Tournament wasn't cancelled due to COVID.

Jan. 16th 2014, NMSU (Menzies) @ Chicago State… 86-81
Jan 18th 2014, NMSU (Menzies) @ UM Kansas City… 68-66
Mar. 12th 2016 NMSU (Menzies) vs. Cal State Bakersfield (@ Las Vegas, NV)… 58-56 (WAC Tournament Championship)
Feb. 17th 2017 NMSU (Weir) @ Cal State Bakersfield… 72-53
Feb. 26th 2022 NMSU (Jans) @ Chicago State… 61-59

The truth is NMSU is the best of WAC basketball. Very sorry to see them leave

RE: 2022-23 WAC MBB Week #8
This is Sam Houston and Utah Valley's season to win. NMSU (team chemistry issues) and GCU (injuries issues) are lurking in the background ready to pounce if things fall into place. And that's not to say that another WAC team couldn't take it all if they catch fire at the right time going into March... Seattle U... Stephen F. Austin... Southern Utah.... California Baptist... etc.

SUU had 7 scholarship players and 2 walk-ons suited up for tonight’s game.

And as long as they had all 7 it looked like they could've kept 10-12 points ahead indefinitely. Once SUU's only suited big fouled out, NMSU started a comeback and might have pulled it off with another 2-3 minutes of playing time.

I fear a rout when we visit SUU on New Year's Eve.

And it was not that close. If things don’t change soon for NMSU hoops we’re looking at a mid-level WAC finish at best. Very tough basketball to watch. And not tough in a good way.

The Aggie offense was very disjointed with no flow of any kind.

It will be interesting to see if the lack of Aggie offense was due to a poor Aggie team or a very good SUU squad. We shall watch over the next few weeks as the conference schedule moves along.
