The Cycle of Realignment
Is FBS realignment a fairly predictable cycle? I believe the answer is yes, and it appears it has occurred on about a10 year cycle over the last 30 years.
July 27, 2021- Texas and OU announce their move to the SEC, leading to a domino effect that causes the BIG12, AAC, and Sun Belt to expand with programs from the AAC & C-USA. As a counter move to the SEC, the B1G adds USC and UCLA on June 30, 2022.
Between 2011 & 2012, the Big 12 lost Nebraska to the B1G, Colorado to the PAC, plus Texas A&M and Missouri to the SEC, leading to the dead of the Big East as a football conference, and the creation of the AAC. Also, C-USA and the Sun Belt were forced to expand.
In 2004, the ACC expanded by raiding the Big East, leading to the Big East to raid C-USA, and in turn C-USA to raid programs from the WAC and the MAC. TCU was added to the MWC.
In 1994 the SWC dissolved and 4 of it's members formed the Big12 with members of the Big 8. This round of realignment ended in 1998, when the bloated WAC split after some programs met and agreed to form the MWC. This led to the death of the Big West as a football conference.

....
I think you'll find that 10-year cycle corresponds pretty closely to network contract renewals.
