I didn't realize they got to pick who they play against. I thought the people paying the bills had a big say in who they wanted to invite.

Don’t kid yourself. If a conference knows that a bowl is going to be affiliated with a G5, they avoid it. They want a bowl that’s going to give them a P5 opponent.

If you’re a 6-6 SEC team, there’s no shame in losing to a 6-6 Big 12 school in a bowl. A loss to a 9-3 AAC team on the other hand looks really bad.

Notice that the Big 10 doesn’t play the MAC in Detroit anymore?

The SEC has only ever played 4 bowl games against the MAC, including just 2 since 1979.

Bizarrely the SEC was 0-5 in its first 5 games against the MAC, and was 4-7 against the MAC through 1986. Largely because Kentucky, one of the worst SEC teams, was the main SEC team that was playing the MAC in those days. The SEC has gone 99-6 against the MAC since then.

Those stats aren't right. It shows Miami as 1-2. Miami beat Florida, Georgia and then independent South Carolina in 3 consecutive years in the Tangerine (now Citrus) Bowl, 1973, 1974 and 1975.
