An early look at the 2023 football season.
Now that the season is wrapped up and the recruiting class is (mostly) done I thought I'd look at each position group and what we have leaving and coming back. I've also added my excitement level for each group. Remember this could change some between now and February with guys transferring in and out or adding more recruits. I haven't included many guys who will be true freshmen since I don't see many contributing next season.

Quarterback
Should be back: Smith, McCoy, Blount
Coming in: Udengwu
Gone: Powell
Excitement level: 5 out of 10

This is one of the two key position groups for next season in my mind. Powell really came on late in the year and played great. He obviously isn't much of a running threat, but when given time he could really sling it. Smith showed some potential, but can continue to develop, make all his reads and become more accurate. Udengwu has some impressive film and put up good numbers, but this a very different level than what he was playing at. It wouldn't shock me if they add a grad transfer like Powell, I think someone mentioned Bowman from UofM, that would be the kind of player I would expect if we were to bring someone in. Either way, a lot of question marks at this position since there is so much unproven, if one of these guys can separate themselves we could have a very special season.

Running back
Should be back: Evans, Jackson, Jackson-Anderson, Boone, Moss
Gone: No one
Excitement level: 10 out of 10

This should be a great group! Even if a guy or two transfer out, having Evans and Jackson back should be a great combo. Those two really compliment each other well and some of the young guys like Jackson-Anderson and Moss were pretty big recruits and have shown flashes. Given what we have coming back on the O-line, this group could have a big year! Especially breaking in a new QB, these guys will need to carry the team for the first few weeks and I have no doubt they can do it.

Wide receivers
Should be back: Knue, Lassiter, Mitchell, Keefe, Summers
Coming in: Wood and Walker
Gone: Drummond and Beydoun
Excitement level: 7 out of 10

Losing Drummond and Beydoun will hurt no question. They are two of the best to ever do it at Eastern. Having Knue and Lassiter back is a great starting point though, they have both been fantastic. Summers played a bit early last year and hasn't done much since. Mitchell and Keefe always show up on the depth chart but I don't remember either of them doing anything. I would assume those three would be the favorites for bigger roles next year. I've included our two recruits (Wood and Walker) since this is a sport we are going to have some holes to fill and they are two of our biggest recruits. I wouldn't be surprised to see a them try to add a JUCO by February. I wanted to say 8/10 on this just because Creighton and crew always seem to find WR, but kept it at 7/10 because there are questions about the guy who will be throwing them the ball.

Tight end
Should be back: Jackson, Getzinger, Paaske, Reese
Gone: Oakes
Excitement level: 9 out of 10

Oakes was a solid player, and I'll always remember his last catch, run, and jump for that first down which was one of the final nails in SJSU coffin. He isn't a player that is irreplaceable. Hopefully Jackson is back, I think he has potential. Paaske I think could really be in for a bigger and better role! For a young guy he played great and I think could be come a bigger threat in the passing game going forward. Getz is a good blocker and could be used in those short yard plays. Reese is the X-factor. He was a huge recruit and has the potential to be a true game changer at the tight end. I like this group a lot.

Offensive line
Should be back: Rewolinski, Howie, Douglas, Johnson, Dooley
Gone: Sow, Bates
Excitement level: 8 out of 10

Sow is obviously one of the greatest players we've had and will be a huge loss. Thankfully we have three guys (Howie, Johnson, Dooley) all back who have started for years and are good players. Rewolinski and Douglas both have started in spots and should be able to fill in and play well. I've also read or heard good things about some of the young guys (Jackson, Warnsman, Indestad, Anderson, Lee) so there should be a healthy competition for those spots. We may take a slight step back losing Sow, but overall this should be a good group.

Defensive line
Should be back: Zelinsky, Gaines, Evans, Miles, Bogard, Manior, Merritt, Price, Coleman, Haney, Grant-Randall, Swindle
Coming in: Nosike
Gone: Crawford, Ramirez, Trueman
Excitment level: 6 out of 10

This is the other big question mark in my mind. Ramirez is a huge loss, an all-american, a great great pass rusher...big loss. Trueman also had a great year on the edge and replacing those two will be difficult. Crawford was also a solid space eating tackle. There is A LOT of talent and a A LOT of potential here though. Price has really come along the last two years and could be an all-conference player I think. Haney and Merritt were both productive players before their injuries, hopefully they can come back and play well. It is a huge season for those guys on the edge (Gaines, Evans, Bogard, Coleman) they were all big recruits, have a few years in...its time some of them need to step up, and with Ramirez and Trueman on their way out the opportunity is there. Same thing with Swindle in the middle. I know a lot of people are excited about Messiah Blair (and rightfully so) but I think it will be hard to come in and make an impact as a true freshman, especially with the guys ahead of him.

Linebackers
Should be back: Kline, Sparacio, Cameron, Scheidt
Gone: Speights
Excitement level: 10 out of 10

Kline and Sparacio are great, and having them back is huge! They might be the best pair of linebackers we have had in the Creighton area, they both seem to be great leaders, tacklers, they can rush and cover. Excited to have them back. Cameron and Schedit both provide serviceable depth. I know part of a linebackers success is based on the guys in front of them, but this group is awesome!

Defensive backs
Should be back: Hernandez, Peavy, Scott, Smith, Lee, Shine, Scandrett
Coming in: Jenkins
Gone: Bogan and Vaden
Excitement level: 10 out of 10

This group should be very good! Shine and Scott should be one of the best combo of corners in the MAC and maybe the whole G5! I think Scandrett and Smith have the making of a great pair of safeties. Peavy is the big hitter back there...I think there is a lot to like about this group.

Special teams (Thanks Luckey for pointing out I miss this)
Should be back: Gomez, Tomasek, Bird, Jackson, Pohl
Gone: Drummond
Excitement level: 10 out of 10

With both Gomez and Tomasek back as well as Bird at long snapper and Jackson as a returner there is a lot to love here. Not only are those guys back, but they are super talented! I believe Pohl is even back for kickoffs. Really the only guy we loose on special teams is Drummond as a punt returner. Honestly I don't feel like that is a huge loss. As a whole Dylan is a massive loss, but as a punt returner specifically Dylan wasn't a big game breaker like Jackson is as a kickoff returner. Dylan was just a steady, smart guy who would catch the punt (which don't get me wrong, there is a big time value in that). At the very least I think we should be able to find a guy that can do that.

Looking at the schedule, at least 3-1 should be very doable in our nonconference again. We'll have to see what the MAC schedule looks like. In my mind those two question marks (QB and the D-line) will tell the tale. Even if those two spots struggle I think there is enough talent throughout the roster to at least get to 6-6 and get back to a bowl. If a QB emerges and all the talent on the D-line manifest itself this team could be right back in the 8-4 to 9-3 range and be in the thick of things to get to the MAC championship game.

RE: An early look at the 2023 football season.
Sellers - outstanding analysis and post!!! My two cents:

Special Teams:

Kick Off Return - Jaylon Jackson excitement 9/10

Field Goal - Lefty Gomez excitement 9/10

Punter - Tomasek excitement 9/10

Long Snapper - Bird excitement 9/10

PAT blocker - Miles excitement 9/10

Special Teams really are good indicators for the overall depth of a football team. I believe EMU will have the top special teams in the entire conference. This past season was the first time I saw an EMU kick return for a TD (exciting). In addition Sterling Miles blocked 3 extra points - that’s unheard of at this level. I expect Sterling tone a starting DE next season.

"Offense puts fans in the seats, but special teams win games." (I re-wrote the old quote about offense and defense).

EDIT: Good slogan but not always true... "The Lions are tied with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Dallas Cowboys for fewest sacks allowed (19) this season.
They rank second in sack percentage, allowing sacks on 3.93% of their dropbacks, and have not given up a sack in 10 quarters dating back to the first half of their Dec. 4 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars."

The Lions' OL is winning a lot of games.

Excellent analysis! I agree that what happens by February with transfers could have a major impact on this team. With the right blend of transfer talent, the Eagles have a shot at going into the season as one of the conference favorites. And it would be awesome to have another B1G win!

I think one of our PWOs at LB and some WR PWOs may emerge.

Nice post Sellers! I couldn’t agree more with your assessments.

I know this is cliche and obvious, but if we get Powell-esque production at the QB position, there is no reason why we couldn’t be in Detroit. I think you saw a major decrease in the passing game when Smith was in. At this point, he is a one-read QB. Meaning, if his first receiving option is covered, he really can’t do much. Hopefully, time, experience, and maturity increase his ability to read his progressions, but it isn’t a guarantee.

I think we absolutely need to add a “passer” with experience. I mentioned Bowman in another thread; having watched him extensively at Texas Tech, he is a talented QB. Although he is even less mobile than Powell. Nonetheless, he would be the perfect guy to come in and replicate Powell’s effect on the passing game.

Although he is even less mobile than Powell. Nonetheless, he would be the perfect guy to come in and replicate Powell’s effect on the passing game.

They had a good passer who was less mobile than Powell...Ben Bryant. I think they need some mobility in the backfield. Smith brings that...as you commented, if he can mature in his reads and also strengthen his arm he could be the starter. Winter workouts are for strength and endurance. Spring workouts are for endurance, agility, and reps. Austin will get his chance, but I still think we'll see a transfer come in and at least challenge him.

(12-22-2022 09:37 AM)Sellers dweller Wrote:  Now that the season is wrapped up and the recruiting class is (mostly) done I thought I'd look at each position group and what we have leaving and coming back.

Looking at the schedule at least 3-1 should be very doable in our nonconference again.

Great post Sellers. Question....are we getting sparacio back? I thought he only had 1 yr of eligibility. if he comes back then that is a MAJOR plus. Kline and Sparacio in my mind are the difference of going from 9-4 to 7-6. I truly believe they are that impactful.

Yep! Sparacio has another year of eligibility if he wants it. He graduated high school in 2018 meaning the fall of 2018 was his freshman year at BC.

2018: Freshman year at BC, he played in two games and redshirted
2019: RS freshman
2020: RS sophomore (didn't count)
2021: RS sophomore redo
2022: RS junior year here at EMU
2023: RS senior

He and Kline actually both graduated from high school in 2018, and have taken same career path (taking a redshirt in 2018, getting an extra COVID year for 2020, transferring here to EMU this year). I know posters who have actual connections to the program (unlike me) have said they have heard both will be back. I agree with you, both are GREAT players and mean a great deal to our team. I don't think either is considering a serious pro prospect though, so unless they are just done with football I assume they'd be back.

An early look at the 2023 football season.
14-0 in 2023! Not likely but not totally impossible either.

RE: An early look at the 2023 football season.
There is that old saying that you don't know you're in the good times when you are in them (or something like that). Over on 247 they rank all the recruits a school has ever gotten, here are EMU's top 25:

1. Brogan Roback
2. Melvin Swindle
3. CJ Parks
4. Messiah Blair
5. Juwan Lewis
6. Sean Cotton
7. Carter Evans
8. John Branham
9. Maliek Bogard
10. Josh Anderson
11. Makhail Wood
12. Donivan Wright
13. Elijah Jackson-Anderson
14. Joe Walker
15. Max Reese
16. Jairus Grissom
17. Deion Brown
18. Cam Smith
19. Jaleel Canty
20. DJ Smith
21. Darrell Davis-Budanauro
22. Sean Kurtz
23. Isaiah Watson
24. Kenny Jones
25. Darrius Moffett

That means 12 out of our 25 best recruits (48%) ever will be on the current roster. Also, had Samson Evans and Chase Kline committed to us out of high school they would also be on this list meaning 56% will be on the roster.

I know recruiting rankings aren't the end all be all, our two best players over the last few years (Lang and Crosby) were not big time recruits, but I guess all of that is to say we are in an era of EMU football where we have more talent then we ever have.

Well done Sellers. I do agree that 2 star guys can eventually be NFL guys but if I had the choice, I'll take more talent on paper than not. I know it's simplistic but it's so apparent that the increased talent in those rooms is making us better. I look at the guys who transfer out and the majority of them are to FCS schools. Years ago we would have relied on them and now we don't have to.

I loved the team we had coming in this last season and now knowing we have Sparacio and Kline as well as our 2 R.B's, the O-line, and a talented secondary then wow I love next year's team too

once we know the official roster (who.is leaving and who.is coming in) it will be very interesting to read about the boards expectation for next year

The 'big' game looks to be at Minnesota and nothing would make me happier to beat that fake coach over there. Minnesota doesn't scare me. All other games look winnable. My super, not official prediction would be 6-6 unhappy 7-5 acceptable 8-4 pretty good 9-3 target.

With the way we finished the season, and who we have coming back (assuming no unexpected transfers), Ford Field has to be the goal. I don’t care how we do OOC, as long as we don’t embarrass ourselves. Let’s win the MAC. This team is more than capable of doing so.

I'm with Sam, we've been there and done that with flying the Jolly Roger. Toledo got stomped 77-21 in Columbus, but they won something we have not in 35 years, The MAC Championship.

No one has noted that we lose our DC who made adjustments late in the season.

Lest I be wrong we had the same players the last third of the season as we did the first third. We got different coaching from our de facto OC and different schemes from our DC.

As seasoned MAC fans know, the difference between 8 - 4 and say 5 - 7 isn't much. Maybe new schemes which turned a probable 'L" into a "W".

As seasoned MAC fans know, the difference between 8 - 4 and say 5 - 7 isn't much. Maybe new schemes which turned a probable 'L" into a "W".

Steve your analysis is indeed solid. It WAS coaching this year that turned the season around. That said, I don't see any consistent return to the 4-2-5 defensive alignment that is incredibly run vulnerable. Nor do I see our offense returning to the prior approach of sitting on a lead in the fourth quarter. Without those changes, I could have easily seen Ball St, Kent and CMU as potential losses.
