RE: Granja's first appearance
I guess Granja being redshirted was thrown out of the window.

The kid showed some potential.. He looks like he can block shots.. wanted to try too much but I guess he was anxious to prove himself.. He needs to get bigger and adjust to the speed of college basketball here.. Hope he gets a chance to show his game.

Doubt Penny would have birned his redshirt if he wasn't going to play again but who knows.

I feel the same way. Throwing away his redshirt status for several minutes of garbage time in a blowout doesn't make any sense. Just speculation on my part, but I feel this may indicate Malco's injury is worse than expected and we may need another big off the bench.

Of course I could be completely wrong too.

They asked him about burning the red shirt in the postgame, and Penny said that Granja wanted to.

What happened to the “you can play a few games and still redshirt “ rule?

Correct and I was aware of that. It just seemed a bit extreme to burn his redshirt status this far into the season for a few minutes of garbage time. First thing I thought was perhaps Penny realizes that Malco may not come back soon or he may be playing at a much diminished capacity. Then again, it could also mean that Penny really doesn't see any long term prospects in Granja and doesn't care about giving up his status, hence the speculation.

I think Penny realizes this team desperately needs a shooter to make any sort of real run in the post season and Granja has the best chance of filling that role. But you cannot start playing him in February and expect him to be ready to start contributing so the ease into minutes has to start now. I imagine in the beginning of the year Penny was hopeful someone else would fill the shooter role and he could redshirt Granja but that just has not happened.

Redshirts have to be a 2-way agreement. It would do the coach zero-good to redshirt a kid who resents it - because he will just transfer out next year. Seemed obvious Granja wanted to burn it. Fine with me if it's fine with Penny and Ian.

Yes - and something I can't believe basketball coaches have not gotten changed.
In football, you can play 4 games (plus the postseason) and still redshirt.
That's 33% of the season.
In basketball, that's the equivalent of about 10 games - but the NCAA allows zero for hoops.
Weird - but once again, fb drives the bus.

I'd feel better about that if he made even one shot.

True, it has to be something both parties agree to if one is to avoid negative feelings. I don't have a problem with it at all, just curious if there was more to the story and motivation.

I get what you are saying but his shot looked smooth and more pure than anyone else shooting the ball for us. Time will ultimately tell...

I can't disagree, but I would have hoped he could have scored at least one point at that stage of the game against an opponent of that caliber. It could have been nerves, but he had several chances and failed to really do anything of note. Hopefully we will see more of him, for better or worse.

RE: Granja's first appearance
I mean, he played only 5 minutes at a time in the game where we were not really running any offense. His teammates tried to set him up to score a couple of quick baskets, but the shots both just spun out. He was overmatched with speed, but did a couple of things okay on D. Really hard to make a judgment on that limited appearance. What speaks more is that he's just not in the rotation. He is going to be a project - we will see if he and Penny want to stay together to build.

I imagine we'll see him on the floor again before it's all said and done. I agree that it's too early to say much.

I have a good feeling about it.. Seems like Granja wants to stay in Memphis and learn from Penny and the coaching staff.. Frank Haith is a hell of a coach.
