Ben Bryant Year 6
Ben Bryant has announced via his twitter he'll be back for year 6. Don't read the comments though people are nasty and cruel.

Hopefully he'll have a better chance to succeed with a coaching staff whose philosophy is something more than "uhhh... yeah, just go out there and hope somebody gets open before you're swarmed over by the pass rush."

Glad to have him back! I certainly wonder if this as well as the transfer QB doesn't make Praeter start to look elsewhere.

Four years ago, people were dissing Ridder. Then he evolved and learned to walk on water. Prater deserves an opportunity to compete for UC's QB job. Just like Ridder deserves a chance to grow into a role with the Falcons despite an inauspicious start last week.

Yeah, I mean they all "deserve" a chance to compete (however you define that). As a fan base we need to accept whomever the coaches name as the starter and not accuse them of malpractice and/or unfairness because they aren't playing the guy you want to start.

RE: Ben Bryant Year 6
Ben Bryant is a man. I don’t think he’s truly coming back to compete as Emory/Prater will have so many more reps with the new staff by time he’s back from what it sounds like.

UC fans do need to stop booing. It’s embarrassing this isn’t professional sports although it’s getting closer. 9 win season and people were acting like Ben was worst QB ever every game. It was a joke.

Prater had an opportunity in summer camp, against Tulane, and against Louisville (sure not fair but neither was it for Louisville’s backup). He flopped every opportunity and it was quite clear Ben was the better QB.

I’m pretty certain Emory Jones will lock up this job quickly after watching a couple vids. Has all the tools. Competed well against an Alabama team both with his arm and legs. If Prater stays and beats him out cool but from what I saw Emory is a better athlete with a better frame but first and foremost a QB first with a heck of an arm.

Bolded, I agree. We have terrific fans who bring it every game now but that was an embarrassment. I really believe it was more an expression of frustration with the offensive coaching decisions than with the guys on the field but any player would certainly take it personally.

My section there were direct calls all the time when Ben missed a pass specifically by two knucklehead well over my age adults acting like it was the Bengals and Kitna playing over Palmer. I sit with my pop but my group of friends generally wanted Prater playing due to just the 4* label and got that sense from the whole UC fanbase including students. Those that trusted coaches just cheered both on when in.

I do agree the offensive schemes overall were horribly frustrating but it was pretty clear to me the boos were directed at Ben and screams of cheering when Prater came in back that claim up further.

It needs to stop.

Edit: If you follow BCJ is was clear it PO even the insiders (some of which wanted Prater to start), they seemed to assume to coaches weren’t happy by it but to further that point Fick had to answer the questions a few times in pressers in which he always pointed to Ben’s maturity, and most importantly it PO well respected former players that came back for games and were guest on podcasts.

If the students are doing it that’s one thing (young ignorance). To hear it all over the rest of the stadium is another.

Yeah, the booing was bad, but chanting for Prater to replace Bryant when he was on the field was worse. The way fans treated Bryant, I’m surprised he wanted to come back.

prater had his share of boos. He never seemed to progress with his throwing arm. Not many programs will deal with a QB like him. Hopefully Bryant is healthy and improved as also Emory.

Over on BCJ it didn’t help matters that throughout the spring they kept telling the fans how close the competition was. One of the host actually went on to say they hoped Evan would win the job. Then as the season went on there was a lot of Ben is the team MVP talk which didn’t make sense unless you knew how behind Evan was.

What I think happened is that this former staff wanted Arkansas guessing about which QB would start but those close to program knew Evan wasn’t even close. The messaging backfired and created a situation in which fans believed both QB la were relatively equal but in reality Ben was far better.

So when the offense struggled fans wanted to try the equal but younger option. The Des situation in which he came off the bench in the UCLA didn’t help with fan expectations either.

Fans were calling for Ben to replace Des all the way up until the final 2 years. Luckily it was mostly kept to message boards but I remember how many were happy Ben got a chance against Memphis due to Des injury.

All I know is last year was ridiculous especially during a 9 win season. Everyone is a paying fan so can do what they want but IMO a large portion of the stadium sounded like the hillbilly/t-shirt fans at Ohio State or Kentucky numerous times every game throughout the whole season.

I thought it was embarrassing to be frank and it was clear the majority of current players on the team and former Bearcats we all respect thought it was a complete joke.

Again, my preference is to cheer on whoever player is in when in and keep my frustrations strictly to chats with my father, friends, or on the message board. I’ve noted before Nippert is about as good as it gets as a home field advantage. Let’s keep it that way for the players which at times I felt we didn’t last year for first time in my life. Just my .02 cents.

That was Aaron, who was not covering the practices which was mostly Chad and sometimes Dave.

Aaron was swept up into what I think afflicted a lot of people-- they liked the "idea" of what Evan was supposed to be without really knowing what the kid could or could not do. He checks all the boxes:

- 4-star Guy
- Cincinnati Kid
- Dual Threat QB
- Cool Hair
- Physically resembles Ridder, so "hey, he can play just like him- only better."

The much preferred this guy to the (their perception) "boring, drop back passer who transferred back from EMU."

As to why Chad said it was a "close race" I think he has explained it that Bryant was better each day, but Evan played well enough to at times give him a run for the money. If the staff did not give him the clear to do so, he isn't going to say it is obvious that Ben was going to be the starter. He would lose the staff's trust and for a guy in his business that is valuable.

It will be interesting to see how Satterfield manages these types of competitions. After six years of evidence, I think the former staff liked to keep everyone guessing as to who was going to start at QB1-- perhaps even the players themselves.

So when the offense struggled fans wanted to try the equal but younger option. The Des situation in which he came off the bench in the UCLA didn’t help with fan expectations either.

I didn’t want to name names but you pretty much summed up the problem this past year.

RE: Ben Bryant Year 6
I was critical of Bryant during the season.

In retrospect my frustrations should have been less on Bryant and more on the OL and the OC.

I still don't think that BB performs at a high enough level for what the team needs, but he was clearly our best option at QB.

And with a competent OL he most likely would have looked a lot better.

Please explain in detail how Prater "flopped" against Tulane.

Sure.

10 of 26 for 102 yards and 3.9 yards passing average with no touchdowns and 1 interception. 35.7 QBR

Had the most carries on the team at 19 with the worst average of yards per carry. Tulane only had one sack so dont blame the YPC average on that. No touchdowns.

If you just want an athlete that isn’t a QB Prater is your guy I guess but that won’t win you many games unless it’s Mike Vick level athlete and even he had a rocket arm in college.

Praters offer list is very suspect to his 4 star rating. Dominating Indian Hill type of schools in high school does nothing for me.

It’s not like he was Emory Jones type of 4 star that had Bama, Ohio State, Florida, Georgia etc. offers like many seem to act like it was Miami Fl, Mich St, Okie State type of schools. Also, posters and analyst I respect both on this board and 247 noted the horrible throwing mechanics and those have barely improved. I’m not going to hammer a Bearcat any further in here and maybe he fixes some items that makes him a more dangerous passer. We’ll see.

RE: Ben Bryant Year 6
IMO the best comparison of Prater-Tulane would be Bryant-Arkansas... both essentially first starts against ranked teams on the road. I don't see a huge diff between the performances (not saying stats, just the performance of the team) but IMO Bryant probably represented himself just a touch better.

That said, Prater was possibly a dropped pretty much perfectly thrown pass away from continuing/completing a game winning drive in about as high pressure a first start as can be imagined.

I still feel that both BB and EP were victimized by an OC and game plan that did not optimize the skills of either QB and of course the oft mentioned porous O Line. IMO BB was more handicapped than EP as the team and playbook seemed built more for a mobile QB (ala Des) and Gino seemed determined to fit BB into that mold.

BB was pretty clearly the more polished of the 2 QBs, and IMO Prater was the more athletic. I don't think EP "cost UC the Tulane game" but he could have played better with some help. My hope is that CSS brings in a QB1 that fits his system or is willing/able to adapt to the personnel he inherits until he can get the skillset he wants for his system
