I just don't get you people.

Prater gets us 24 in a loss to Tulane and he F'n sucks.

Bryant gets us 24 in a loss to Arkansas and it's a damn gutsy performance.

"You people" understand the staff actually got this one right by a long stretch.

I see.

24 points from Ben Bryant is MUCH better than 24 points from Evan Prater.

Makes perfect sense.

This logic only applies if you attribute all the points to the qb. For me the Tulane game was a one time game planning accomplishment where the staff schemed running lanes for the running backs and the offense scored in spite of the qb doing very little to help.

I don't think it would have worked as teams got film on what they did.

BB couldn't beat out Ridder and he went to Eastern Michigan. Jones played in the SEC and the P12. What QB do we have that can say that? We are taking a step up in conference play next season. IMO Jones has the edge but I agree that you don't hand someone the job - they earn it in camp. That said, he is the type of QB that CSS desires in his system.

I agree it will be Jones. I'm just not expecting huge strides forward. He's a bridge to getting to a guy in year 2 we can build around.

Perhaps it was all just supporting cast but he's lost a lot more games than he's won the past two years and both seasons he was starting they did so well that the head coaches both got fired mid season. Bad ju-ju.

Prater threw ONE...I repeat ONE TD pass in 10 straight quarters of play. And we all saw how he got the one.

That lone TD was just like we drew it up...in the street with a nerf.

Coincidentally, I was skimming through the DVR list last night and came upon the IU game from this season. I was "speed watching" just the first half to bask in the glow of that sunny, sold out Nippert and a 28 point lead; most of Bryant's passes were splendid. But it was clear early on that UC absolutely couldn't run the ball against Indiana. And then the second half more than affirmed that opinion as UC tried to blow that big lead with an unimaginative, unproductive ground game.

Regarding Bryant, he could be a very capable QB next season if a rushing game could be established to complement his passing. Are we faced with an either/or in that regard--providing the pass protection he needs completely comprises the rushing attack?

Grow some thick ass skin as a coach or player. Now, chanting obscenities or some other obnoxious words at someone is crossing the line. Fick was asked postgame about the booing of Ben and he said fans were doing it because they care [about winning]. Part of the home win streak that UC football enjoyed was due to a packed house of rabid fans supporting their program. You can't ask them to show up en masse and then expect them to not be passionate good or bad. If I was booing this year it would've been aimed at the staff - especially the the two assistants calling plays and dumbing down are offensive line.

I think everyone understands that booing your own team is fine for certain things, like if they give up or throw cheap shots or something like that. It's the booing of a QB for just not playing that great that many think is unacceptable.

And how is it that you can come up with your own line in the sand--cursing--yet can't understand how other people have come up with their own line? If you were booing Bryant for overthrowing someone on 3rd down, that's just as bad as cursing to me.

Doesn't happen often but if warranted I'll boo the guys with clipboards when they stink. I don't boo a kid who's only transgression is accepting a scholarship and doing what the coaches tell him to do.

BTW, Ben already has his masters degree and will work on a second for free next year. Good for him. Smart young man.

You seem to be the one drawing lines in the sand. I'm simply saying it's not worth the boo police to regulate for a sporting event. Booing a QB in his first game would be odd. Booing a QB or any player that was hit and miss through multiple games is not so odd. You keep the booing etiquette book by your seat and refer to it when needed. Fans are fans - both good, bad and neutral - and they're going to do what they do especially after paying for a ticket, travel, parking and concessions.

To be fair, Prater's last past was probably his prettiest.

Can't remember who...was it Scott?...who literally dropped it in the endzone against Tulane, after Prater slid it perfectly in there?

And I'm not a big "Prater fan," but that really should have been a TD and it had nothing to do with Prater that it wasn't caught. If we're going to weigh the man on his body of work, then we have to take the good with the bad...and Prater showed signs of settling in and improvement as he went on.

(Also, don't forget the Fickell angle here... The man clearly wasn't trying to win that game. I won't go as far as saying that he threw it, but kind of like Rich Rodriguez at WVU...who somehow choked and lost a game to Pittsburgh at home, knocking WVU out of the BCS Championship contention, only to announce his departure the next day)...Fickell clearly had incentive to finish the season quickly. It's hard to "throw touchdowns" when the playcalling repeatedly finds you handing off to runs up the middle.)

RE: Ben Bryant Year 6
Prater’s last pass against Tulane was not into the end zone. UC was backed up on its own 10-yard line, and he threw a nice pass that went through the hands of Tyler Scott and fell harmlessly to the ground, ending UC‘s attempt at a miracle finish. There should be enough evidence from the 2 and 1/2 games that Prater was at the QB controls, however, that he has very minimal passing ability. The sample size is not great, but it’s certainly enough to show that many of his passes aren’t even close. Severely underthrown or severely overthrown and with very little touch even on short throws. Prater has running ability for sure, but I recall instances in both the Tulane and Louisville games where he fell on QB keepers without anyone even touching him. He completely lacks a command presence as a QB. If he did, I doubt that we would have seen such a wholesale departure from our wide receiver room at season’s end.

People won't do what they do, they'll do what everyone around them will tolerate. The fans who booed Ben Bryant for overthrowing a WR on 3rd down were acting like schmucks and should stop.

Btw, it's going to happen to Davenport here soon.

The continued effort to run McCelland inside the tackles was IMO idiocy. After a while it could not have been all Gino. When I saw L’Ville run a bubble screen, lost memories of Mardy recurred.

After the half at the Fenway Bowl Combs said we needed to establish the run game. I knew then that game was lost.

We did need to establish a running game. Unfortunately, we did not recruit new offensive linemen at halftime, so it wasn't going to happen.

RE: Ben Bryant Year 6
Comparing Bryant’s first start this year to Praters is not a reasonable comparison. Bryant’s first start was also a number of teammates firsts starts as well, including a center who was thrust into the starting lineup days earlier. He had a lot of passes that were bad due to timing (behind or ahead of the WR) but most of his “bad” passes were well placed balls it’s the timing that was bad. (First drive INT aside of course). Comparing scoring (24 points each) when at the Nip vs on the road at an SEC venue, when the kicker missed two FGs, when even establishedbplayers were still shaking off the rust, when God knows what was going on with helmets coming off every other play etc etc

Prater took over a team on the verge of a conference championship. His bad passes were flat out inaccurate passes and most of these weren’t stretching the field like many of Bryant’s off passes against Arkansas. Prater was consistently missing guys on 8 yard digs,5 yard flat passes and even the RB behind the line of scrimmage. It wasn’t a timing issue, it wasn’t an inconsistency issue, Prater flat out can’t pass. That’s why the irony was that his one perfect pass was dropped to lose a game.

You're going to ignore Bryant had an entire year of playing actual games against college players vs it being Praters first start ever? Bryant missed numerous throws our first game and not just because of being timing issues with receivers.

I’m not ignoring anything. I said the comparison of first games this season wasn’t a reasonable comparison. If your argument is that Prater could be comparable to Bryant after a year of starting go right ahead. That’s not what was being said and it’s not what I was responding to.

Let's all just admit neither UC quarterback this year was very good. That's why Coach Satterfield is bringing in new guys. We need someone to hold us over until Brady is ready to start.

Prater’s first start was the worst game by a UC QB in over 5 years. His performance in the bowl game was more of the same. Quit trying to church it up. He’s a great kid but he’s not a great or even good player. That’s the objective truth.
