Prater was Mr. Ohio Football coming out of high school (his tapes tell the tale) but now is judged inadequate because he was obliged to step into a starting role without the benefit of much game experience. I wonder how he'd stack up against all of us armchair quarterbacks?

As you said “Praeters first start” …Down receivers..a head coach who already knew he was leaving..playing against a top 20 team…a depleted offensive line…poor running game.. and you think it’s fair to judge Praeter on those factors?

Prater is way better than me but I'm not a D1 quarterback leading a Big 12 football program. Unfortunately, from what we've seen I'm not sure Prater is that guy either. I hope he develops into it and does so at UC but I'm really not sure. The Mr Football thing is irrelevant now.

3 of the last 8 Ohio Mr. Footballs either ended up at MAC schools or below FBS level. Accumulation of stats, especially against less talented teams, does not always mean an abundance of high level talent.

Prater could be a very good QB in an offense that limits the need for timing routes and accuracy and maximizes his running potential (essentially what he did in high school, running a ton and throwing fades all over the field). The problem is, that kind of offense doesn't really exist at the FBS level due to the superior physical talent throughout the level.

Again with the tribalism. You guys always do this.. you pick a side and argue if something happens it’s because nobody gave them a fair chance, mismanaged the situation or are intentionally screwing them over. It’s never because your guy was not as good as you thought they were. This act is so damn tiring.

By the way, Merry Christmas.

Keep in mind, two different coaching staff's have evaluated Prater's play and determined he's not good enough to be the guy. (Fick chose BB, CSS went out and got EJ)

But of course the armchair coaches always know more than two college f-ball coaching staffs.

I actually attended several of his games his senior year since my wife taught a lot of those kids. Often the schools he was playing against barely had enough boys at the school to be able to have enough interested to even field a roster.

Division IV in Ohio often seems more intramural in nature. I posted about how his stats were accumulated and against the talent he wasn't facing and what his throwing mechanics looked like and of course people went knives out since nothing critical can ever be said objectively, apparently.

CLF knew he was a project recruit. We were perhaps one twisted ankle from hoping to just be bowl eligible last year as opposed to being in the CFP.

RE: Ben Bryant Year 6
Prater will end up either as a career backup or at an FCS school as a starting QB...he just doesn't have the most important skill any successful high level QB has, the ability to consistently throw a ball accurately. The sooner we move on from this whole dialogue, the better...because it isn't productive at all outside of seeing those of us who cannot be objective.

I've seen Drogosh play a ton, and he is already above Prater on the throwing side of things, with that being said, he is still EXTREMELY raw and has a lot of growing to do in yhe passing game before he can be productive, and there is no guarantee that'll happen.

I'm hoping we aren't seeing the same results with Corey Kiner? Massive stats against inferior HS competition not translating to P5 level play.

Division 4 can be a bit iffy. The good football is played in Divisions 5-7.

But we still follow Division 4 anyway on my podcast, "Bruce Monnin's Computer Points".

Fair question, but just who did run well from behind this offensive line the past season? Here's hoping Satterfield and company can figure it out, fast.

Especially between exits 112 and 92 on 75.

Yeah, I'm not worried at all about Kiner...he performed well in spots in the SEC West last season, he'll be fine.

The continuing Prater discussion among UC fans is a strange and wonderfully Cincinnati thing.

You are either good enough at this level or you aren't. If he was a 4 star recruit from Chicago few would care nearly as much one way or t'other after what we've all watched.

Fickel chose Bryant but he also must have seen something in Prater, or he wouldn't have recruited and signed him. I won't claim these were the only reasons, but I suspect CLF started Bryant because he had experience and seniority relative to Prater, even though he had been banished to the MAC for a year. I also am not claiming that Prater is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I just think he shouldn't be judged on the basis of a couple of starts for which he was ill-prepared and that nobody anticipated. Prater deserves a better chance to prove himself.

In other news, are folks in Atlanta unhappy because Ridder hasn't sparkled in his first two starts? Are they suggesting that maybe he's good enough only for a gig in the Canadian league?

Surprised by their reaction. He showed good progression from 1st start to 2nd start against a really good Baltimore D. I didn't watch their game but stats look pretty decent.

Yeah, people like you keep clinging to the "it's because he's from Cincinnati" thing because that gives you an easy out to justify banging on people and ignoring facts.

The fact is that in his first start of the year he had us in position to win the game and the defense blew it. Then he made the play to at least keep us in the game and Tyler Scott dropped a pass that hit him right square in the chest.

But you know, he's a Cincinnati kid so none of that matters.
