According to research, darker alcohols contain more byproducts from the fermentation/distillery process that can give you stronger hangovers. The key is limit the number of drinks especially on an empty stomach LOL.

I wasn't able to find Buffalo Trace until I went on my October trip to Texas. They limited it to one bottle per customer. I've asked around my neck of the woods and it is a supply/demand issue. The demand has outpaced the supply for now. You can opt to get on an email list from local stores to notify when Buffalo Trace is available. One bottle per customer still applies down here. Glad I brought a couple bottles back with me from Texas.

Bourbon is generally darker due to the wood casks its aged in. Make it and age it in stainless steel and it looks like vodka.

I don't own a still to make alcoholic beverages since that is illegal...but I do hear you can use them for making hand sanitizer in the age of Covid.

Yes and the particular wood used in the casks/barrels also assist with the resulting flavor of the bourbon. Single barrel means just that - it's aged in only one barrel as opposed to small batch - the use of a blend of different individual barrels. Single barrel is where more of the top shelf brands come from.

Just finished my Christmas shopping and stopped by a Virginia ABC store [state liquor store] and guess what...they had Buffalo Trace in stock. Limited to one and I bought one. Yeaaa.

There is a liquor club online called Flaviar that has almost any brand you like. It has an annual fee but any orders over $60 are shipped free of charge. They almost always have Buffalo Trace available and you are not limited to the number of bottles you can order. Prices vary with availability, but I have seen it listed from $24.95 to $31.95 per bottle (750ml.) You can visit their website and browse for free.

All these bourbon nerds are annoying. Buying, hording and driving up the price.

I tend to stay mid range and woodford is my standard everyday drinker.

I'm locking down with a bottle of Blantons and one of Angels Emvy until they dig us out or we go all Donner Party.

Blanton's [single barrel] is top shelf. I've never tried it. Isn't that over $100/bottle?

Picked up a Four Roses Small Batch and now my bourbon stash is set for the coming weeks. Set for an arctic blast starting Friday overnight through Saturday afternoon. Wind gusts and temps bottoming out in the low teens and wind chills near zero. That is damn cold for North Carolina.

Yeah we have a generator. Got 20 gallons of back up rec gas today. Our house doesn't need electric for heat in a pinch due to LPG. But genny needed for well pump. 3 dogs two of which are Great Danes... I can use them like a ton ton on the ice planet Hoth.

Blantons is cheaper than that up here. This was @ 70 which is more than I normally spend. It was there and price was right.

Two Danes...damn. One takes up a whole couch. You must stock up on dog food or feed them from hunting stores - can't imagine how much two of those beasts consume.

That is a good price. I'll look for it next time. I typically spend in the $30-$50 range but I don't mind spending more on occasion if it's top shelf stuff.

Tried the Horse Soldiers Bourbon. Good stuff.

I'm more of of a scotch drinker, but when I drink Bourbon I go with Makers Mark, Woodford Reserve, or Monkey Shoulder.

Just had a nice glass of Woodford Reserve tonight. Planning one or two during the Georgia-Ohio State game tomorrow night.

So while we're back on the subject, any of you ever do the Bourbon Trail in Kentucky? It's kind of on my list for a long weekend visit and I'm wondering if you recommend visiting particular distilleries, towns, hotels, or dining establishments as part of the experience. My wife isn't a bourbon drinker but I hear the Trail offers some great Americana to experience in small towns along the way.

Spend a night in Bardstown.
Go to the Old Talbott Tavern for dinner.
Go in the summertime and see the outdoor drama, My Old Kentucky Home: The Stephen Foster Story.

Spend a night in Louisville at the Brown Hotel, and get a Hot Brown.
While in Louisville go to the 8Up rooftop bar in the evening.

We visited Makers Mark, Buffalo Trace, and Woodford.

Of those three my opinion is that Buffalo and Makers have the best experience.

There is also the Bourbon Burn rode bike tour.
I did it this past fall.
It is a 3-day event at the Kentucky Horse Park, and each day you ride different routes that have stops at various distilleries.
There were some people on e-bikes for those that don’t like or can’t ride long distances.

Anyone who's hiked extensively in the desert Southwest and encountered packrat middens might tell you guys that packrat piss smells a lot like Bourbon -- or vice versa.

For that reason, perhaps, I much prefer either Scotch or Irish whiskey.

Many of the bourbons mentioned I have tried and like. There are three more I would recommend:

Angel's Envy
George Dickel 8 Year Old Bourbon
Elijah Craig Bourbon - Small Batch

If you are having trouble finding a specific bourbon, try ordering online. The links I provided go to the Nestor Liqour site. I have ordered from them with satisfactory results. As I remember, in the past, if a minimum order is placed they cover shipping.

A couple months ago I went to the Augusta Distillery in Augusta, KY. It's fairly new, I think, and they are just starting to build a huge new facility in a turn of the century car parts plant. It looks amazing from the plans. Augusta is a cute little river town about an hour from Cincinnati. I'd never been. George Clooney grew up there. We took the ferry back across the river, which was fun if quite short. The bourbon was great, although I can't say I'm all that discerning. It was a fun afternoon.
